Detroit, Mich. – In celebration of National Tourism Week the Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau (DMCVB) is hosting Discover The D Hometown Tourist Day on May 6 in Campus Martius Park from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.
This attractions fair is designed to create awareness of the importance of being a hometown tourist and encourage local residents to visit the tourism gems in their own backyard. Regional attractions, hotels and events will be on hand to pass out promotional material (coupons, fliers, brochures) and talk about their venues to locals. There also will be a chance to win numerous hometown tourism packages, including stays at metro Detroit hotels, restaurant gift cards and passes to local venues.
“We value our local community and their impact on the tourism industry,” said Larry Alexander, DMCVB president and CEO. “This is the perfect opportunity to encourage them to get out and explore all that the region has to offer.”
Each year the region welcomes 18 million visitors per year that generate $6 billion in local spending annually, Alexander said.
The day’s events will begin with a press conference to launch a new DMCVB surprise initiative and unveil the bureau's newest creative for its advertising campaign to promote metro Detroit nationally and internationally as "America's Great Comeback City." Travel Michigan will be on hand to discuss their support for the “comeback” message.
More than 30 participants are scheduled to attend Discover The D Hometown Tourist Day including, American Jewelry and Loan featuring guests Les and Seth Gold of “Hardcore Pawn;” Author of “100 Things to Do in Detroit Before You Die“ Amy Eckert; Detroit Tigers with special guest Paws; Edsel & Eleanor Ford House; Detroit Zoo; Great Lakes Crossing Outlets; The Henry Ford; Legoland Discovery Center Michigan with special guest Bertie; Michigan Science Center; Motor City Brew Tours; The Parade Company with members of the Big Head Corps; Wheelhouse Detroit; and the brand new Jimmy John’s Field.
