NATIONAL TRANSPORTATION WEEK


Thank you to everyone that helped celebrate National Tranportation Week (NTW) in Detroit on May 9-16, 2009. Stay tuned for updates about next year's event!

National Transportation Week | Visit Detroit | Detroit Michigan


National Transportation Week (NTW) is a Federal celebration of the important role that all modes of transportation play in keeping America moving. Signed into law by President John F. Kennedy in 1962, the United States Department of Transportation designated Detroit as the official home of NTW in 2006 and the Motor City launched its initial roster of events during NTW 2007.

NTW Detroit features both public and business-to-business events that explore current transportation issues (highway, air, rail and seaway) and encourage young people to consider careers in the transportation industry. The important role that military transportation plays in keeping America safe is also a key focus of annual celebrations of NTW in metro Detroit and elsewhere.

  • Tuesday, May 12  — WWJ Radio Presents the 3rd Annual NTW Transportation Breakfast Panel Discussion
    This year’s breakfast panel theme is "From Road to Rail and Beyond." Speakers include Bob Ficano, who will address the status of the growing “Aerotropolis” phenomenon, John Swatash to address the status and future of light rail, and Mark Van Port Fleet, a Highway Development Director for MDOT, who will discuss what Federal stimulus dollars will mean to Michigan and how they'll be used for highway/infrastructure.  the state’s highway infrastructure. 8:00 a.m. - Breakfast and Registration; 8:30 a.m. - Program; $10/person; RSVP to (313) 202-1947; Lorenzo Cultural Center at Macomb Community College, Corner of Garfield and Hall Road (M-59), Clinton Township.
  • Tuesday, May 12 through Wednesday, May 13 — ITS Michigan Annual Meeting & Exposition, in partnership with the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT)
    More than 300 representatives from industry, higher education and all levels of government will gather once again at the Rock Financial Showplace in Novi to discuss the latest developments in “intelligent transportation” (think cars, trucks, roads and signals talking together to avoid accidents and share road and weather conditions).  Advanced examples of VII (Vehicle Infrastructure Integration) will be demonstrated in the parking lot.   • Saturday, May 9 — Autopalooza August presents The Big Three in The D Cruise (canceled due to rain, see May 16 for rescheduled event info)
    Classic cars, hot rods and muscle cars from GM, Ford and Chrysler will cruise from the Walter P. Chrysler Museum in Auburn Hills to the GM Renaissance Center in Detroit to The Henry Ford in Dearborn to kick-off NTW and show our strong support of the American Automobile Industry. Cruise participation is by invitation only, but spectators are welcome and encouraged to gather at either end of the cruise, or along our route (down Woodward Avenue and across Michigan Avenue) to view this unique assembly of collectible cars and show their support for America's OEMs. The cruise departs from Auburn Hills at 10 a.m. and arrives in Dearborn at approximately 11 a.m.

    Autopalooza August is a celebration of Southeast Michigan's automotive heritage through a series of major cruises, races, and shows during the month of August.

  • Friday, May 8 Transportation Choices Fair
    Join us on Friday, May 8 from 11 a.m. -  2 p.m. at Cadillac Square (next to Campus Martius) for a FREE Transportation Fair to kick off the Commuter Challenge. Learn about the wide variety of transportation choices available to southeast Michigan commuters. Check out SMART and DDOT buses. Learn about carpool and vanpool matching services. Talk with local bicycle commuters. See what's the latest from the People Mover.  Find out about new transit options coming soon. Sign up for the Commuter Challenge to win prizes when you try out new ways to travel.


  • Saturday, May 9 - National Train Day
    At the Detroit Amtrak Station, as at hundreds of stations around the country, rail supporters will celebrate the 140th anniversary of the completion of the first transcontinental railroad. Come by the station (at 11 W. Baltimore, just west of Woodward at New Center) between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. to witness a presentation to Amtrak's Wolverine train from the Mayor of Detroit, followed by train exhibits, trip planning, and much more.


  • Monday, May 11 through Friday, May 22 — Detroit Commuter Challenge 2009
    The Commuter Challenge invites southeast Michigan commuters to Go Green and $ave Green with a contest and prize drawing for people who try new transportation options those two weeks.  Participants can try riding the bus or People Mover, sharing a carpool or vanpool, biking, walking, or telecommuting.  Each day of using a new commuting mode can enter participants in a drawing to win an iPod, restaurant gift certificates, and much more. It is jointly sponsored by SEMCOG, SMART, DDOT, MDOT, Compware's Commuter Assistance Program, the People Mover, the League of Michigan Bicyclists, MichiVan Commuter Vanpools, and Transportation Riders United.     Monday, May 11 – Carpool / Vanpool / Flextime day

    Tuesday, May 12 – People Mover day
    The Detroit People Mover will hold its first ever "People Mover Midway - Lunchtime Carnival."  Arcade games will be located at four People Mover stations from 11a.m. - 2 p.m. with a chance to win exciting prizes.     Wednesday, May 13 – Ride the Bus day
    Ride the Bus day will provide commuters everything they need to try riding the bus for the first time, including guided morning bus rides, Bus 101 information sessions, and even some free bus passes.  Details at www.DetroitTransit.org, www.SMARTbus.org and www.DetroitMi.gov/DDOT.

    Friday, May 15 – Bike day
    Join dozens of other cyclists and ride your bicycle to work downtown along Woodward (from Royal Oak or Ferndale) or Jefferson (from Grosse Pointe or Indian Village). A great way to get exercise and see the city in a new way, while commuting to work.  Voted by the MetroTimes as "the best reason to ditch your car 2006"!   • Tuesday, May 12 MDOT-AASHTO Transportation Education Day
    MDOT and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) will promote transportation engineering careers at the Detroit Science Center 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The exhibit area will feature interactive AASHTO TRAC displays, including magnetic levitation, bridge design and motion modules. The special activities are free with paid admission to the Science Center. For more information, call 313-577-8400.

  • Wednesday, May 13 through Saturday, May 16 — Formula SAE®
    A student design competition organized by SAE International (formerly Society of Automotive Engineers). Student members conceive, design, fabricate and compete with small formula-style race cars; points are awarded for static events (presentation, design, cost analysis) and dynamic events (acceleration, skid-pad, autocross, fuel economy, endurance). Michigan's event will be held at Michigan International Speedway, 12626 U.S. Highway 12, Brooklyn, MI 49230. Spectators are welcome at all Collegiate Design Series competitions.     Dequindre Cut | Visit Detroit | Detroit Michigan

  • Thursday, May 14 — Dequindre Cut Grand Opening
    Join the Detroit RiverFront Conservancy and its partners in celebrating the official opening of the Dequindre Cut Greenway on Thursday, May 14.  A grand opening ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. at the Woodbridge St. entrance of the Cut followed by food, activities and entertainment taking place at all three entrances of the Cut (Woodbridge St., Lafayette St., Gratiot Ave.) until 2 p.m. The public can enjoy cooking demonstrations from Eastern Market, guided walking tours of the Dequindre Cut from Inside Detroit and much more. The Dequindre Cut is an urban recreational path (
    Greenway/Bike Path/Walkway) converted from a former rail bed. It will currently link Detroit's east riverfront with the Eastern Market district. For more information, please visit www.detroitriverfront.org.


  • Saturday, May 16 — Autopalooza August presents The Big Three in The D Cruise (rescheduled from May 9)
    Celebrate the men, women and companies that design and manufacture the coolest cars in the world:  GM, Ford and Chrysler! View outstanding American hot rods, muscle cars and classics at Macomb County's newest cruising headquarters, as we wrap up this year's National Transportation Week celebration. Join us from 9 a.m.-11 p.m. at SONIC Drive-In, 40257 Groesbeck, just south of Cass, Clinton Township.
