ROCK & ROLL

music_rock2.jpg

Detroit is one of the rock capitals of the world, both from its range of artists to its impact on rock history. Building on a legacy of blues, jazz, Motown and R&B, and pulling inspiration from an industrial environment, artists from Detroit have time and again revolutionized the sound of rock-n-roll and exported it to the rest of the world.

This started with punk and heavy metal rockers like MC5, the Stooges and Alice Cooper, who refined their sounds in the small clubs and corner bars in Detroit's Cass and lower Woodward corridors. It continued with funk artists like George Clinton. Recently, through garage rock bands like the Dirt Bombs and the White Stripes, Detroit has again made its mark in rock-n-roll history.

Detroit is also a great place for rock fans. As a major concert stop, with hundreds of large and small venues, you can be sure to see your favorite artist. Detroit also hosts regular rock musical festivals, including the Hamtramck Blowout-the largest local music festival in the nation.
