SHOCK

shock_sports.jpg

Quick to prove they belong in this championship town, the Detroit Shock of the Women's National Basketball Association have won two national championships in just 10 years. Coached by former Piston great Bill Laimbeer, the Shock adds some much-valued femme flavor to the sporting options here.

Housed in the Palace of Auburn Hills, and a sister team to the Detroit Pistons, the Shock has always been energized by an impressive roster, including Ruth Riley, Anna DeForge and Carla Boyd. This year their winning line-up includes all-stars Swin Cash, Cheryl Ford, Deanna Nolan and Katie Smith. The team was previously coached by WNBA hall of famer Nancy Lieberman.

Although new compared to other Motown teams, the Shock has a growing and increasingly attached fan base, regularly piling into the Palace for games. Plus, with tickets starting at just $10, Shock games are actually affordable, and a great way to experience basketball action without breaking the bank.

Championship: 2003, 2006
