#catchmeindetroit is a 35th birthday celebration and kickoff to Jessica Nabongo’s travels to the last 26 countries on her mission to become the first black woman to visit every country in the world. For the past 12 years, Jessica has celebrated her birthdays in foreign countries. But for her 35th birthday, she wanted to bring the celebration home to Detroit. Jessica wants to share Detroit with everyone before she kicks off the last leg of her journey.
Tickets will get you into her photography exhibition, showcasing her photography from all of her travels from over 150 countries. All photographs in the exhibition will be for sale. The event will have light appetizers and cocktails, plus an opportunity to meet new people, chat with Jessica and explore her travels. The discussion with Jessica will be lead by Keondra Bills Freemyn.
Jessica is a wanderlust, writer, entrepreneur, podcaster, public speaker, travel influencer, and native of Detroit. Her goal is to use her story to educate and inspire others to travel and experience the world around them.
A first generation American, Jessica was born and raised in Detroit to Ugandan parents. She attended St. John’s University in New York, where she earned her undergraduate degree in English literature. In just a few years after college, she started (and ended) a career in pharmaceutical sales, moved to Japan to teach English, and completed a graduate degree at the London School of Economics. She captured her experiences along the way, honing her photography skills.
As her career path changed, Jessica realized that travel, writing and photography continued to show up as vehicles of self expression and were essential parts of her life, leading to the creation of her blog, The Catch Me If You Can. She uses her blog to share her story and show her journeys on the way to visiting every country in the world.
