For the third year, professional cycling is in the city!
Elite cyclists from around the world will take to the streets of Detroit on Saturday, July 13 and compete for one of the largest purses in the nation at the Detroit Cycling Championship, a USA Cycling Pro Road Tour (PRT) race offering competitive racing as well as a variety of other biking and fitness related activities for all ages and abilities.
Entering its third year, the community event is hosted by the Detroit Athletic Club Foundation. Last year’s race attracted racers from 25 states and eight countries. The race will take place adjacent to Beacon Park, a favorite community gathering spot and one of the city’s newest public parks. The USA Cycling sanctioned race attracts cycling enthusiasts as well as friends, families and fans who want to share in the thrill of watching nationally recognized racers compete for $45K in cash prizes and primes.
The Detroit Cycling Championship consists of 12 races, including Category I-V men’s and women’s races, a kids’ race, corporate race, a spinning competition and HandleBar Detroit pedal push competition. In a nod to the rise of women athletics, the race attracts many of the nation’s leading women cyclists, including Samantha Schneider, 2018 Detroit Cycling Championship Women’s Pro Race winner, Emily Ehrlich, Dearborn, Michigan women’s pro, and Laura Van Gilder of the Mellow Mushroom Pizza women’s pro team, winning race times on par with their male counterparts.
