It's almost impossible to travel through the city of Detroit without seeing eye-catching mural works today and in Southwest Detroit, this is especially true. Though we may pass by and appreciate them at first glance, there is often much more to these beautiful works of art than meets the eye. On this bus tour you will be guided by local artist Elton Monroy Duran through the heart of Mexicantown in Southwest Detroit to explore first-hand some of his murals, which he loves to share with visitors from around the world. As he details the stories and ideas behind his works, he will introduce you to some of the people, businesses and organizations while the City Institute guide will provide additional context about the city and neighborhood’s past and present along the way. Guest Guide Profile: Elton Monroy Duran is a Detroit-based visual artist born in Ciudad Sahagun in the State of Hidalgo, Mexico. Duran acquired a BFA from the School of Fine Arts at the University of the State of Querétaro (1998-2003). He describes himself as a humanist artist with scientific and sociological approaches, which he seeks to convey through his work. He started the mural and art company Corpus Art Inc. in Detroit in 2015. Highlights include: -Plaza del Norte -Tamaleria Nuevo León -Plaza del sol -Xochi’s Gift Shop -Paleteria Michoacán -Dream Picker Mural -E&L Supermercado Mural Weather Policy: Tours will occur indefinitely, rain or shine, unless a severe weather warning is issued by the national weather service on the date of the tour for the time of the tour. Weather related cancellation or ticket transfer requests will not be approved unless submitted at least 48 hours in advance of the event start time. If a severe weather warning or event causes the tour to be cancelled, City Institute will offer to transfer participant tickets to another date or provide a refund.
