Detroit artist Standfest is driven by a preoccupation with optimism, gentrification and its aftermath. And while he dreams of a better tomorrow, his experiences compel him to critically examine the fundamental absurdity of fantasies to achieve human perfectibility and the fallibility of structures engineered to halt entropy through a series of prints and paintings. Standfest is an artist, writer, and the editor-in-chief and publisher of Rotland Press, which presents satirical publications of a culturally relevant nature. The press was recognized by Art In America in 2016 for publishing a project on the late painter Peter Williams as being one of the top five “significant artworks” to emerge from Detroit that year. In the past two years, RP has published books by Sue Coe, H.R. Giger and David Lynch. In addition, he has prints on exhibition at the Detroit Institute of Arts, "Printmaking in the Twenty-First Century.” Ryan Standfest: When Day Is Done runs December 3, 2022 to January 28, 2023. The opening reception is December 3rd from 5 p.m.-9 p.m. An artist talk is scheduled for January 14th at 6pm. The closing reception is January 28 from 5 p.m.-9 p.m. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturday, noon to 5 p.m. The Papier Galerie, located in Galerie Camille, 4130 Cass Ave., Suite C, Detroit, Michigan is dedicated to showcasing works on paper, prints and book art.
