Overview
Today we will take you to the legendary, original restaurants that are Detroit staples! Plus, you will learn some fun historical facts along the way. We will start off with the battle of the Coney's. We will start with an American Coney Island, one of the oldest, if not the oldest, business in the Detroit area and then try Lafayette Coney Island's next. You will vote and decide who has the best Coney. The American Coney Island restaurant has remained at the same location since 1917. It all began when Greek immigrant, Gust Keros, opened a hog dog cart on the corner of Michigan Avenue & Lafayette, where he sold his Coney Island hot dogs. He then, brought his brother, Bill, to the country to get involved in the business. However, in 1924, Bill decided to open Lafayette Coney Island right next door instead. You will taste Coney Island hot dogs from both places and decide which is your favorite. It is a local debate which is the favorite. It’s a rivalry that quickly emerged and Detroiters pledged allegiance to one or the other, but never both. What is a Coney Island hot dog? It is a high-quality, specially-seasoned, natural casing hot dog served with a special chili sauce, topped with mustard and sweet onions served on a warm, steamed bun! Then, we are off to Buddy’s Pizza, the original location, for a slice of their amazing Detroit-Style pizza. Gus Guerra and his team made their first square-shaped pizza in 1946. Baked in forged-steel pans borrowed from local automotive plants, they were able to produce a very light and crispy crust which is now known as “Detroit-Style Pizza.” The Detroit-Style Pizza is recognizable by its iconic square shape and crunchy, cheesy corner slices. We'll have some fun at the outdoor Bocce Ball Court too (weather permitting)! Our final stop is Dutch Girl Donuts, which was founded in 1947 by John and Cecelia Timmer. Back then, it was a former Dixie Cream Donut franchise before it was renamed. Even though there has been some minor tweaks over the years, the bakery is still made from all original Dutch Girl recipes. While Dutch Girl Donuts closed due to COVID, they are reopened in 2024 and we could not be happier! You will receive a 6 pack of Dutch Girl original glazed donuts to take home with you to complete the day!
