Game Day to Weekend Getaway in Detroit

August 2, 2018  |   Story by Kayla Putz  |   Photos by Bill Bowen

The D is a sports town, so even if you’re cheering for the opponent, you’ll still enjoy the Detroit game day experience.

Chicago White Sox fans, you’re in luck. The Sox play at Comerica Park Thursday, August 23 – Sunday, August 26, giving you the perfect opportunity to see your team in those away jerseys and take part in Detroit’s game day festivities.

Getting to Detroit from Chicago

The best part is, you don’t even have to drive!

Even though we are the Motor City – you can take the Amtrak from Chicago Union Station to Detroit. It will drop you off on the edge of Detroit’s Midtown/New Center area. Its a quick Uber or QLine ride from the station to reach Detroit’s downtown core. The QLine is Detroit’s streetcar system and it takes riders up and down Woodward Avenue, the city’s main corridor. The ballpark is right off off Woodward Avenue, so it’s a good way to get around town once you’re settled. For more information on navigating The D, check out the Detroit Transportation Guide.

Where to Stay in Detroit

If if you want to be close to the action, we suggest staying in the heart of the sports and entertainment district. There are plenty of hotels to stay in if you want to be close to Comerica Park. The Aloft Detroit at the David Whitney, The Siren Hotel, Hilton Garden Inn and Atheneum Suite Hotel offer a short walk to and from the park, with plenty of places to grab some food or drinks in between.

Participate in Pre-Game Fun

Pre-game eats and drinks are all a part of the game day experience. Looking for gourmet burgers and carefully-crafted drinks? Rusted Crow is where it’s at. Their PB&J burger is a must-try.

If bar fare is more your style, try Hockeytown Cafe. It’s in the heart of the entertainment district and has more than 30 TVs in case you have another game to catch. The rooftop patio gives a great view of the city.

Hit up Elwood Bar & Grille for a tailgate feel. The outdoor patio and canned beer provide the perfect pre-game setting. Warning: Don’t be overwhelmed by the Tiger gear.

Keep the Party Going Post-Game

Just because the game is over, doesn’t mean the fun has to end. Comerica Park is in walking distance to Greektown, Detroit’s nightlife hub. Bars, casinos and late-night eats line Monroe Avenue. Firebird Tavern will keep the drinks flowing and there’s a dj and dance floor upstairs.

For gaming action, visit Greektown Casino. It’s where real Detroiters play! Must be 21 to enter. Greektown Casino recently opened a food hall – Monroe Market – which features six quick-service restaurants for a fast bite in-between games.

Places to Hit While You’re in Town

Even though you’re in town for the game, there are still plenty of places beyond the sports scene to explore. Are you a music fan? Check out the Motown Museum or Jack White’s Third Man Records. If live music is more your style, try Cliff Bell’s.

Detroit’s art scene does not disappoint. The Detroit Institute of Arts is among the top 10 museums in the country, offering over 100 galleries with art from ancient to modern times. The D is also home to some of the best street art around. For a glimpse, visit Eastern Market, The Belt or the Dequindre Cut.
