Summers in Michigan are as sweet as they are short. If you want to make the most of the warm-weather season, there’s still time to plan a weekend getaway right in the city. Whether you’re a short drive from The D or a local in need of a staycation, we’ve got your guide to planning a perfect last-minute trip.

How to Plan

If it’s your first time in Detroit, check out our recommendations for places to hit during your stay — whether it’s one night or a full weekend. You can request a free visitors guide to help you map out the trip and browse our suggested Detroit itineraries.

What to Do

Visit Belle Isle

Detroit’s 982-acre island, accessible bridge, is home to an aquarium, a conservatory and plenty of space for outdoorsy adventures. Pack a picnic and enjoy a great view of the Detroit skyline.

Take a Cruise or Tour

The city’s growing travel industry has spawned several tour services to guide you around town, depending on your interests. Try a bus tour of Detroit’s best breweries with Motor City Brew Tours.

Get Some Culture

From the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD) to the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA), Detroit has plenty of museums and galleries. Or, take in a show at the Fox Theatre or Fisher Theatre.

Catch a Game

The Detroit Tigers baseball season stretches into the fall, so you can still grab tickets to a game at Comerica Park. And the Detroit Lions regular season starts in September.

Hang Out at Campus Martius Park

The park in the heart of downtown is converted into an urban beach for the summer months, so you can relax by the fountain and people watch.

Where to Stay

Depending on your budget, Detroit’s got plenty of rooms available — from big-name hotel chains to quaint little boutique hotels. Use this accommodations guide to find one that suits your needs and see some of our favorites.

Getting Around

Getting around the Motor City is easier than ever, even without a car. Try the QLine street car or People Mover, or two-wheel it with a Mogo Bike Share.
