Last Minute Travel: Why Sports Fans Should Stay One More Day in Detroit
Modified: December 19, 2022 | Story by Kayla PutzDetroit is a sports city, so we’re used to seeing opposing fans in town on game day. Don’t worry, we’re pretty friendly. If you’re in town for the Chicago White Sox or Cleveland Indians play the Detroit Tigers this summer, make a last minute travel decision and stay one more day in Detroit to explore beyond the sports scene – you’ll be surprised.
Last Minute Travel: Get to Know Detroit
You’re probably staying near our sports and entertainment district – but there’s much more to explore in The D. (Just in case you need to make a quick hotel reservation, consider the Aloft, Greektown Casino-Hotel or the Hilton Garden Inn. The best way to get your bearings is to take a city tour. Show Me Detroit Tours, Detroit Experience Factory and Destination Detroit Tours will give you an excellent overview of the city and will get you on the outskirts of downtown.
Looking for something a little more adventurous? Take a Diamond Jack River Tours on the Detroit River, ride through town with Detroit Segway, or take one of our pedal pubs for a spin – Detroit Rolling Pub or The HandleBar are great choices.
Learn a Little Detroit History
You probably didn’t know metro Detroit is home to the largest indoor-outdoor museum complex in the U.S., which gives you all the more reason to check out The Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation and Greenfield Village – both open on Mondays.
The Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation is home to the bus Rosa Parks took her historic stand in, as well as the chair President Lincoln was shot in. Step back in time at Greenfield Village, where you can explore the lab where Thomas Edison had his light bulb moment or the workshop where the Wright brothers taught us to reach for the sky.
Eat like a Detroiter
If you’ve been in The D for a few days, you’ve probably heard about our legendary Coneys. While you’re in the neighborhood, we encourage you to take the Coney challenge at Lafayette Coney Island and American Coney Island. Take a bite of both and decide who serves up the best fare. Choose wisely and be careful when you’re talking to locals – the decision is polarizing.

Enjoy the Outdoors
There’s nothing quite like a Detroit summer. Get out and enjoy the sunshine on a Wheelhouse Detroit bike during your last minute travel plans in The D. Explore the Dequindre Cut, Detroit Riverfront and Belle Isle. You’ll certainly get your outdoor fix and will see a side of Detroit you didn’t know existed.

Take a Behind the Scenes Tour of Ford Field
You might not be a Detroit Lions fan, but as a sports fan, we thought you might enjoy of a tour of Ford Field. You’ll get a chance to walk the field where your favorite teams have played and to live out your gridiron dreams. We won’t judge you if you dive in the end zone and try to live out the glory days.
We love our sports, but there’s a whole different side to Detroit. Stay one more day to check it out.
