Modified: May 02, 2022

DETROIT, MI – In celebration of National Tourism Week, Visit Detroit will host Detroit Hometown Tourist Day on Wednesday, May 4, in Campus Martius. Metro Detroiters can browse an exhibitor fair from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., where attendees can connect with representatives from more than 40 metro Detroit restaurants, attractions, and hotels. The event is free and open to the public.

“There is always something to discover, uncover, and rediscover in Detroit,” said Angela Jones, membership and partnership manager at Visit Detroit. “There is no better time for Detroiters and metro Detroiters to come and see all that our region has to offer.”

Attendees will have the chance to learn more about the vibrancy and dynamism attracting visitors from around the country. The travel and tourism industry is an integral part of Detroit’s economy. Despite the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Detroit region welcomed 16 million visitors that spent over 7 billion dollars and generated more than 1 billion dollars in state and local tax revenue. Detroit’s tourism industry is integral to the state’s economy, with 39% of the state’s visitor spend and 42% of tax revenue generated in the Detroit region.

Pre-pandemic, the industry experienced year-over-year growth since the great recession. In 2019, the hospitality and tourism industry supported an all-time high of more than 460,000 jobs in Metro Detroit supported by tourism, making up nearly 27% of all jobs in the region.

Attendees of Hometown Tourist Day will have the chance to win one of several hometown tourist packages, including overnight stays at metro Detroit hotels, restaurant gift cards, event or tour tickets, and passes for local attractions.
