When it Comes to Choosing a Convention City, It’s Location, Location, Location

Detroit was selected as the host city for Michigan Realtor®’s annual leadership conference called Achieve in 2017 because not only is a large percent of the state association’s membership from metro Detroit, but there is also a lot of excitement happening in the city, according to event planners.

“There’s so much going on. It feels like a new city each time we visit,” said Jodie Cady, Michigan Realtors® Director of Events.

Michigan Realtors® contacted the Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau with an RFP and several properties responded. They ultimately chose MotorCity Casino Hotel to host the convention.

Upping their Game

Two association events are held in conjunction with Achieve, a Realtors® Political Action Awards lunch and an evening President’s Reception.

“It is a challenge to make these events unique, fun and celebratory each year, but this year our attendee engagement was at an all-time high” said Cady.

She credits the success to hosting the events at the hotel’s state-of-the-art Sound Board theater.

“It has all the bells and whistles, glitz and glamour, but still fit within our budget,” said Cady. “We held our awards on the same stage that artists like Aretha Franklin and Kid Rock have performed. That’s something we haven’t ever been able to offer before.”

Whereas in the past, many attendees chose to skip the awards luncheon or President’s Reception, this year’s event attendance was excellent.

“The staff was so creative and willing to think out of the box,” said Cady. The reception included a red carpet entrance into Sound Board, a Motown band and “VIP” security check in. One final special touch: Michigan Realtor®’s current president loves bread pudding. To personalize the President’s Reception, MotorCity’s chef prepared individual cups of bread pudding with little signs that said “Eat dessert first!” to pass during the cocktail hour. “It was a fun surprise that our president and attendees had no idea about. It became a topic of conversation throughout the conference. Plus, it was delicious.”

Although none of the conference’s organized events included gaming, several attendees tried their luck during off hours. “Part of our conference room package also included some free play, which was a nice treat,” said Cady.

Surveys Tell the Story of Conference Success

Event planners were quite pleased with the attendee survey results following the conference, with overall satisfaction of 4.5 out of 5 and overall rating of hotel and staff at 4.43. Sixty percent of attendees provided feedback.

“It proved to us that we made the right decision for host city and venue and delivered the high level of service that our group expects,” said Cady.
