Often times, traveling to another city for a conference means never seeing the outside of the hotel or convention center conference room in which it’s being held. But if you happen to be in Detroit for a conference at Huntington Place — and you find yourself with a few hours to spare between sessions — here are a few ways to spend your free time:

If You Have an Hour

Take a stroll down the scenic Detroit International RiverWalk, which is adjacent to Huntington Place. It spans more than three miles, from Rosa Parks Boulevard to the Belle Isle Bridge.
The GM Renaissance Center is within walking distance from Huntington Place, or just a People Mover stop away. Not only does the Ren Cen display GM’s latest vehicles, but it also has tons of places to grab a bite or a drink, including Granite City Food & Brewery, Volt and Zoup, among others.

If You Have Two Hours

Detroit is a city rich in history, grand buildings and vibrant art surrounding public places. So do some actual sightseeing!

Detroit Experience Factory offers a free Art & Architecture walking tour. During the one-hour excursion, you’ll travel through The Belt, step inside One Campus Martius, wave to the Spirit of Detroit and end at the Pure Detroit shop inside the majestic Guardian Building.

If there’s not a tour that fits your schedule, there are plenty of architectural masterpieces around the city that you can check out on your own.

If You Have Three Hours

Any one of Detroit’s three casinos is a great place to spend a few hours, so try your luck at Greektown Casino, MGM Grand Detroit or MotorCity Casino. If you’re not a gambler, take time to unwind while you’re there instead.

The MotorCity Casino puts a decidedly Detroit spin on its 8,000-square-foot D.Tour Spa, which defines urban luxury through private treatment rooms, thermal whirlpools, steam rooms, saunas and rain shower facilities. The MGM Grand Detroit offers the resort-style Immerse Spa, which is a 20,000-square-foot facility that includes a Technogym fitness zone and an indoor infinity-edge pool.

If You Have an Entire Day
