After a two-year hiatus, Ackroyd’s Scottish Bakery is hosting its fourth annual Burns Night celebration, the worldwide tradition of honoring Scotland’s national poet Robert Burns (most known in the U.S. for penning “Auld Lang Syne”), with food, music, dancing, and readings.
The star of the dinner is the haggis: Burns was a man of the people, and his poem “Address to a Haggis” was popular among the working class; a recitation of the poem and “piping of the haggis” (a ceremonious bagpipe procession of a large haggis into the room) is the highlight of Ackroyd’s Burns Night party.
The family-friendly event also features sausage rolls, neeps and tatties, shortbread, and other Scottish favorites, along with entertainment from local musicians, Highland dancing, bagpipes, and storytelling. Saturday, Jan. 28, 5-9 p.m. at Urbanrest Brewing Company (2615 Wolcott, Ferndale).
