Saucy Secrets and Savory Slices: Uncover Detroit's Pizza Paradise!
This tour offers a delectable deep dive into Detroit's rich pizza heritage. You'll uncover the saucy secrets and savory slices that have made the Motor City a mecca for pizza lovers worldwide. From the pioneering recipes that put Detroit-style pizza on the map to the cozy, old-world charm of the city's most iconic pizzerias, this experience will leave your taste buds dancing and your pizza knowledge expanded. We know where the best Detroit-style pizza is found and you will too after taking this tour. We will stop at Michigan & Trumbull where their journey actually began in Pittsburgh, where they identified a gap in the market for authentic Detroit-style pizza. They came to Detroit in 2012 and started experimenting with recipes, blending traditional techniques with inventive flavor combinations. The end result...DELICIOUS and you will enjoy a slice of their Detroit-style pizza. Next, we will head over to Buddy's Rendezvous, the original location, and the birthplace of Detroit-style pizza. Pizza was added to the menu in 1946. Using the kind of steel pans that were manufactured for the auto industry, Buddy's started making Sicilian pizzas. Since the pans are deeper than standard Sicilian pizza pans, the dough proofs in the pan with a more angular shape. In addition, the toppings can spread all the way to the edge of the pie, leaving behind no rim to hold. Instead, the perimeter gets a deliciously charred cheese border. Sauce is usually applied above the cheese, which is why some call this style Detroit Red Top. Enjoy a slice of their pizza and we will even have the opportunity to play Bocce at the outdoor courts (weather permitting). Our final stop is at Loui's where Loui Tourtois opened his place in 1977 after making pizza at Buddy's for years. He was taught by Gus Guerra, so absolutely part of the original lineage. His pizzeria is the most iconic and cozy feeling in town, with chianti bottles covering the walls and ceilings. But the decor isn't nearly as interesting as the delicious pizza you will enjoy!
