Detroit is quickly becoming the heart of disc golf competition. The Motor City is gearing up to host the United States Amateur Disc Golf Championship in June and the Discraft Great Lakes Open in August.
Have you tried a round of disc golf yet? You may have noticed silver posts with chains around the top popping up at your favorite parks and hiking spots. These are part of the disc golf course.
Disc golf magnificently marries a stroll in nature with challenging competition. It's an activity that's great for all ages and is inexpensive to play.
Like regular golf, you start at a tee and aim for a target. In disc golf, you throw a frisbee until you make it into the elevated basket. The person with the fewest throws wins.

Kensington Metropark, The Course of Champions
Detroit is home to the height of amateur disc golf competition. Kensington Metropark hosts the United States Amateur Disc Golf Championships on their Course of Champions.
This annual event brings together the top amateur disc golf players on one of the country's most brutal courses. Sponsored by PDGA Major (Professional Disc Golf Association), these top amateurs get a taste of the next level of disc golf competition.
The infamous Kensington Metropark course, The Toboggan Disc Golf Course, was created initially for the Discraft PDGA Pro/Am Worlds in 2000.
Since then, it's hosted a variety of PDGA tournaments.

Disc golf doesn't require a lot of complicated gear. You can play with a few discs. Most sporting goods stores offer the basics. In the Detroit area, you can get set up at The Throw Shop or other major chain retailers.

Ready to join a weekly game of disc golf and make new friends? There are plenty of leagues throughout Metro Detroit. Downriver Glow and Motor City Chain Gang are two of many in the area.
