Many comedians got their start in Detroit, and the comedy scene continues to thrive throughout the area. Famous comedians from Detroit include Keegan Michael-Key, Sam Richardson, Tim Robinson, Tim Meadows, Tim Allen, Jon Glaser and many more.
Whether you’re looking for stand-up comedy, sketch comedy, improv or other types, Detroit and its surrounding cities offer a variety of great places to sit down and have some laughs. Here are some of the best comedy clubs in metro Detroit.
Detroit House of Comedy
Detroit House of Comedy is located inside Hockeytown Cafe, right in Downtown Detroit near all of the arenas and stadiums. The club features a mix of comedians from around the area and around the country
There are also other shows including, “Tune Up Tuesdays,” which offers free admission.
Seating is on a first-come-first-serve basis and they seat from the stage out. The comedy club offers food and drinks from Hockeytown Cafe, and there is no drink minimum.
Mark Ridley’s Comedy Castle
Located in Royal Oak, Mark Ridley’s has been open since the late 1970s and is the place where comedians like Tim Allen and Dave Coulier.
The club still brings in some of the biggest names in comedy with shows every month. There are also open mic nights.
If you want to get started with your own comedy career, they also offer beginner and advanced comedy classes.
The club is 18-and-over venue and there is a two-item minimum, which can be two drinks, or one food and one drink item per customer.
Planet Ant Theatre
Located in Hamtramck, Planet Ant is a nonprofit professional theatre that has a variety of shows for people to attend.
At Planet Ant, you can see a sketch comedy show, an improv shows, stand-up or even a burlesque show on any night. Their weekly improv shows are a Monday Night Improv and Thursday Throwdown.
For those who want to learn more or get into improv, they have classes for improv, sketch comedy, film, playwriting, stand-up and TV comedy writing.
They also have The Independent Comedy Club inside Planet Ant Theatre where you can see stand-up shows.
Go Comedy! Improv Theatre
About 20 minutes north of Detroit in Ferndale, the Go Comedy! Improv Theatre puts on different shows throughout the year that will have you laughing and impressed.
They occasionally host local standup shows, but as their website says, their main focus is on improv and sketch comedy.
Shows coming up this year include the All Star Showdown, an improvised game show, a weekly improv show on Sundays, a monthly show called “Beginner’s Luck” and more.
They do have drinks and some snacks, and there is no minimum.
One Mike Detroit
One Mike Detroit is located in Downtown Detroit and is a restaurant, bar and entertainment showroom. It was launched by comedian Mike Epps, who is known for his comedy and acting. The bar and restaurant offers different comedy shows, throughout the year, plus different music shows if you want to listen to some jams
The Comedy Bar Detroit
The Comedy Bar just opened earlier this year in New Center, the third Comedy Bar location after Chicago and Pittsburgh. The Comedy Bar has a variety of different stand-up comedians from across the country come in for shows.
Big Tommy's Comedy Club
Big Tommy’s in Novi is inside Big Tommy’s Parthenon, a Greek restaurant. They offer comedy shows every month.
The Magic Soiree
Located in Troy, The Magic Soiree is a magic comedy dinner show that takes place inside Camp Ticonderoga, about 25 minutes north of Detroit. It’s a dinner theatre experience started by Lady Sarah and Keith Fields. You’ll start the night with some dinner and close-up magic, then move into a theatre for illusions, jokes and a stage show.
District 142
District 142 is a newer event venue in Wyandotte, about 25 minutes south of Detroit. The venue mostly hosts musicians, but in the past has also hosted nationally-recognized comedians including Tom Green, Kevin Farley, David Koechner and more.
They have a full bar and no drink minimum
