Detroit Based Residency for BIPOC Women and Non-Binary Artists Aims to Improve the Art World

The Norwest Gallery of Art in Detroit has launched the Womxnhouse Detroit curatorial residency program, featuring seven multidisciplinary artists from across the US.

Norwest Gallery of Art, a Detroit woman owned art gallery, has launched its inaugural Womxnhouse Detroit curatorial residency program. The 2022 cohort features seven multidisciplinary artists from across the country who will curate a community showcase in Detroit this September.

The Womxnhouse residency catalyzes growth for creatives by providing housing, studio space, stipends, exhibition space, mentorship and access to innovative networks for BIPOC and non-binary artists. “We want to break the glass ceiling of elitism in the art world and have space for artists to not only showcase their art but be mentored as well.” said Asia Hamilton, Artist and Founder of Norwest Gallery of Art and Womxnhouse Detroit.

The 2022 Womxnhouse Artists-in-residence are Bre’Ann White (Detroit, MI), Bria Lauren (Houston, TX), Cyrah Dardas (Detroit, MI), Danielle Eliska Lyle (Detroit, MI), Deja Milany (Atlanta, GA), Miranda Kyle (Detroit, MI), and Navjeet Kaur (Rochester, MI).

Womxnhouse artist-in-residence, Bre’Ann White will be curating an exhibition entitled “Pray For Us” that will open at Norwest Gallery of Art on July 23rd as part of her artist in residency. “Pray For Us” explores prayer as an ancestral technology connecting this world and the next, bringing peace, comfort, and solace to those seeking heavenly guidance.

The Womxnhouse Community Residence is the showcase of the culmination of works of the 2022 artists-in-residence. The exhibition is taking place September 17th at The Womxnhouse (15354 St. Mary’s Detroit, MI) and is sponsored by The Knight Foundation and the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,

Incorporated Lambda Pi Omega Chapter Arts Committee. The Womxnhouse is the childhood home of founder, Asia Hamilton and it is currently used as a community arts and housing space for the artists in residence.
