Overview
In recognition of Women’s History Month, we honor the legacy of Marion Alger, whose generous gift of her family home, The Moorings, shaped what would later become The War Memorial. A devoted steward of the estate, Marion’s care for her home, gardens, and community has earned her the affectionate distinction of the Mother of The Moorings. Her original intent for the property to serve as a place for educational, cultural, and charitable activity continues to guide our mission today.
Event Details
This special Sunday afternoon begins with a historically inspired luncheon, reminiscent of what Marion may have enjoyed with family, friends, and neighbors when The Moorings was still the Alger family home. Following dessert, The War Memorial’s in-house historian, Betsy Alexander, will present an engaging talk on Marion’s life and legacy, including her commitment to community service, lifelong devotion to gardening, and her enduring friendship with landscape architect Ellen Biddle Shipman.
The program concludes with a live floral demonstration, with light audience participation, led by a professional designer and featuring traditional arrangements inspired by Marion’s favorite flowers. Guests will leave with simple techniques they can adapt in their own homes, reflecting the care and beauty that defined Marion’s life and legacy.
