Celebrate Black History Month with an unforgettable evening of music, history, and emotion as Detroit Music Hall welcomes the Macomb Symphony Orchestra for Journey: From Slavery to Freedom, a powerful symphonic and choral work by composer Norah Duncan IV.
Told through the enduring beauty of African American spirituals, Journey: From Slavery to Freedom brings history to life with the combined power of a full orchestra and two choirs, Grosse Pointe Choral Society and Oakland Choral Society. This moving work honors the African American experience, its pain, perseverance, faith, and triumph, through music that resonates across generations.
The performance is conducted by Andrew Lee Neer and stars acclaimed soloists Joan Belgrave, Amber Rogers, and Ronald Perkins, featuring the inspiring voices of Simon’s Angels in Heaven. With stirring vocals, dramatic storytelling, and an orchestra in full voice, the evening offers an inspiring tribute to the African American experience, celebrating survival, strength, and the enduring human spirit.
