For the Love of Dessert: Where to Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth in metro Detroit

We may be known for coneys, Motown music, cars and much more, but the dessert scene throughout the area has grown immensely over the past few years, offering a variety of things you may be looking for, and some things you may not know even existed.
From giant donut shakes to fancy macarons, metro Detroit is the perfect place to satisfy that dessert craving after a delicious dinner. Check out some of the best places for dessert, and suggestions for what to get, below.
CITY OF DETROIT
For The Love of Sugar – Brush Park
At For The Love of Sugar, you’ll find a variety of different cakes, brownies, cookies, macarons and even frozen custard. We suggest trying out the lavender and honey macaron and the matilda cake if you’re a chocolate lover.
Bon Bon Bon – Downtown, Midtown & Hamtramck
This place is perfect for those looking to try fancy chocolates. Their artisan confiseurs use a French technique to create flavors for bon bon bons. Build your own box to try many different types of bon bon bons. You can add up to 32 pieces in one box!
Good Cakes and Bakes – Avenue of Fashion
Good Cakes and Bakes uses fresh ingredients for incredible cakes throughout metro Detroit. If you’re looking for something small, try their German chocolate or red velvet cake jars instead of a slice. If you’re looking for something different, check out their lemon or strawberry gooey butter cake, or the rum cake.
Treat Dreams Dessert Emporium – Midtown and Ferndale
Treat Dreams debuts new flavors weekly and has hard ice creams if you want a little booze added to it. There’s also vegan ice cream for those who are looking for something different. If you want to try something new, check out their ham-flavored ice cream, or green tea shortbread.
Detroit Water Ice Factory – Downtown
Water Ice is a treat that’s just like Italian ice with over 20 different flavors. Give the Motown Twist a try where you put soft service ice cream atop and below a water ice flavor. They also have the Motown Mash, which is a secret family recipe.
Sister Pie – West Village
Lisa Ludwinski of Sister Pie has been a finalist for a James Beard Award, and offers delicious pies, cookies and bread. Try the salted maple pie for a sweet and savory pie at once, or give their peanut butter paprika cookies a shot.
Cold Truth – Midtown
Cold Truth offers vegan and dairy soft serve on top of hand-made waffle cones. You can also try their gluten-free vegan cinnamon buns, if they still have them. Try the lavender if it’s available!
Huddle Soft Serve – Downtown
With a small walk-up window in Downtown Detroit, Huddle offers chocolate, vanilla or twist with a variety of toppings in a cone. We suggest getting a float with Faygo Rock N’ Rye.
-320° Coffee & Creamery – Midtown
Located inside the Detroit Shipping Company, you can get coffee or Nitrogen ice cream.
Astoria Pastry Shop – Greektown and Royal Oak
If you’re looking for any type of dessert, Astoria will have it. You can get a variety of cakes, cookies, pastries, ice cream, macarons or even coffee.

OAKLAND COUNTY
Detroit Cookie Company – Ferndale
You can get some normal-flavored cookes at Detroit Cookie Company, or uniquely Detroit cookies like the “Big 3” with Better Made chips, Michigan dried cherries and chocolate chips. Try that out, or the Mad Mix with Better Made Sweet BBq chips and Butterfinger. They also have XL cookies, a peanut butter volcano cookie, and on weekends, delicious cinnamon rolls. You can also create your own ice cream sandwich with two different cookies.
UnBaked – West Bloomfield
This is the place to get edible cookie dough in metro Detroit. There’s unicorn, cookie monster, chocolate chips and much more.
Browndog Barlor – Northville
Browndog has a variety of different ice creams and even alcoholic ice creams with some incredible names like “wake me up before you cocoa.” If you’re looking for a boozy flavor, you can get ice cream with bourbon, rosé, Bailey’s, Prosecco and more. They have dozens of ice creams, and you can even get an ice cream cake.
Donut Bar – Southfield
Here you can find crazy donuts but they do sell out quickly, and when they’re gone, they’re gone for the day. You can go crazy and get a shake with the flavor of a donut, and on top of the lid, you also get a full-size donut.

WAYNE COUNTY
Le Detroit Macaron – Hamtramck
You can get different vegan and regular macarons at this shop in Hamtramck, and on weekends, you can get some cinnamon rolls. In all, they have nearly two dozen macaron flavors to choose from
The Custard Hut – Dearborn Heights
Serving up a variety of frozen custard, you can get a flurry, parfait or try a waffle sandwich with ice cream between two waffles.
Bob Jo’s Frozen Custard – Wyandotte
Open for nearly 75 years, Bob Jo’s offers delicious frozen custard in three sizes. They also do a special flavor that changes often. Don’t skip out on the sprinkles! It is cash only.
S&J CupCakery – Flat Rock
S&J has fancy cakes, cupcakes, pastries cookies and more. Their menu changes day-to-day, so check out their Facebook page for a look at what they have.
Garrido’s Bistro – Grosse Pointe Woods
Garrido’s is a Latin American Restaurant that serves up what they call “extreme shakes.” They have boozy shakes, and it’s not uncommon to find entire slices of cake, or a brownie, on top of your shake.
Shatila Bakery – Dearborn and West Bloomfield
Metro Detroit is also known for its Middle Eastern food, and look no further than Shatila for Middle Eastern desserts. You have to try their baklava or knafeh.
Cheat Treats Café – Dearborn
For those looking for a healthier dessert options, Cheat Treats offers vegan cookies, keto cookies and also just plain old unhealthy normal cookies. You can also try some keto cheesecake, or crazy shakes.

MACOMB COUNTY
Street Sweets – Sterling Heights
With a variety of desserts, pastries and more, you have to try a dessert pizza. You can build your own, picking a size, a base sauce of Nutella, vanilla, chocolate or more, and then choose toppings like cookie dough, marshmallows, brownie bites and others.
Red Velvet Cakes & Pastry – Clinton Township
This shop has different cakes, cupcakes, pastries and more. There are nearly two-dozen flavors of cupcakes, ranging from red velvet to chocolate Oreo truffle.
Wally’s Frozen Custard – St. Clair Shores
Wally’s offers deals on different days like $2 Tuesdays and $5 Fridays. On top of normal frozen custard, you can get dole whip, banana splits, hot fudge cream puffs, coolers and floats or a frozen custard pie.
Modern Cone – St. Clair Shores
Described as “modern ice cream with endless possibilities,” Modern Cone has giant milkshakes, cookie pies, Italian ice cream and more. Check out their Cereal Killer stacker with strawberry ice cream, Trix, Lucky Charms, Fruity Pebbles and a white chocolate sauce.

M-Street Baking Co. – Howell
M-Street has some crazy milkshakes that feature donuts, cookies, nearly full chocolate bars and much more. Try the strawberry shortcake shake with has strawberry ice cream with a strawberry shortcake ice cream bar, golden Oreos, white Kit Kat and a mini cupcake!
