The Muslim holiday of Ramadan began Feb. 28, and lasts until March 29. During the Holy Month, Muslims begin fasting at sunrise with a modest, breakfast-like meal called suhur. At sunset, iftar, which means “breaking the fast,” is often celebrated with friends and family. After breaking the fast, Muslims usually go to the mosque for the night prayer and a special Ramadan prayer called Taraweeh.
The monthlong observance of Ramadan is a period of introspection, communal prayer and reading the Qurʾān. According to Islam, those who observe the holy month of Ramadan with fasting, prayer and faithful intention are forgiven by God for their past sins.
Muslims who have reached puberty and are physically capable fast from sunrise to sunset every day during Ramadan. The fast includes abstaining from food and drink (including water).
According to the Islamic Networks Group, the ultimate goal of fasting is gaining greater God-consciousness, known in Arabic as taqwa, signifying a state of constant awareness of God. From this awareness, a person should gain discipline, self-restraint, and a greater incentive to do good and avoid wrong.
