Best Deli Sandwiches in Detroit
Story by Michelle Martin
Metro Detroiters love deli sandwiches – and that’s a good thing because there are many great places to get one around town. Corned beef is a Detroit favorite, and corned beef varieties like the Reuben and Dinty Moore are always at the top of the menu. But there are plenty of others that are also worth ordering. Here are nine of Detroit’s best deli sandwiches – and where to find them.
Tuna Salad Reuben at Stage Deli
For 60 years, Stage Deli in West Bloomfield has been serving high-quality deli sandwiches that have attracted people – and stage performers – from throughout metro Detroit. Try one of the deli’s four Reubens – including the tuna salad Reuben, made with Albacore tuna salad, sauerkraut, havarti cheese, Russian dressing and served on grilled country white bread.
The Stan at Uncle Harry’s Deli
This small St. Clair Shores eatery proves that great deli sandwiches can be found on the East Side. Uncle Harry’s Deli’s sandwiches are named after the family’s nieces and nephews and include Stan, a traditional Reuben made with corned beef, cole slaw, Russian dressing and served on grilled rye bread.
Vegan Tempeh Reuben at Mudgie’s Deli and Wine Shop
Mudgie’s Deli and Wine Shop is in Corktown – Detroit’s oldest neighborhood – but its menu is anything but old-school. Veggie lovers should try the Vegan Tempeh Reuben, made with tempeh, vegan cheese, sauerkraut and vegan Thousand Island dressing and served on grilled rye.
Georgia Reuben at Zingerman’s
Zingerman’s started in 1982 as a small deli that quickly became an Ann Arbor favorite, and it remains that way today. Order the Georgia Reuben – turkey breast, Swiss cheese, coleslaw and Russian dressing – all stacked between grilled homemade rye bread.
The Westsider at Star Deli
Star Deli has been making sandwiches for nearly 50 years. One longtime favorite: the Westsider, piled high on rye bread with hot corned beef, roasted turkey breast, lettuce, tomato, Swiss cheese, and Russian dressing.
Dinty Moore at Lou’s Deli
With three locations – two in Detroit and one in Southfield – Lou’s Deli proudly proclaims its sandwiches are “good for the Beli.” Try the Dinty Moore – a triple-decker sandwich that stacks corned beef, lettuce, tomato, and Russian dressing on white toast.
Hawaiian Club at Maya’s Deli
Maya’s Deli has been a part of downtown Plymouth since 1985, and its Hawaiian Club is among its most popular sandwiches. It’s made with chicken salad, bacon, lettuce, tomato and mayo and served on white or wheat toast.
Stacked Ham at Louie’s Ham and Corned Beef
Louie’s Ham and Corned Beef has been serving ham, corned beef and other deli sandwiches at its Eastern Market location and other metro Detroit locations (Warren and Mount Clemens) for decades. Try the restaurant’s signature Stacked Ham sandwich with Swiss cheese and served on an onion roll.
Veggie Kovach at Siegel’s Deli
Siegel’s Deli is a favorite locale in northern Oakland County. While there are plenty of meat varieties on the menu, for something different, order the Veggie Kovach – muenster cheese on rye with honey mustard, Russian dressing, lettuce, tomato and cole slaw.
