Cozy Coffee Shops in Detroit
Story by Steffy McCourt
As cooler weather lends way to cozy afternoons where a hot cup of coffee blends perfectly with watching golden leaves fall, Detroit’s eclectic crew of cafes takes center stage. Whether visitors are looking for a place to snuggle up with a good book or a solid connection to Wifi, each of the following cozy coffee shops in Detroit delivers while also offering excellent brews, cool city vibes, and a warm environment.
Germack Coffee Roasting Co.
The Eastern Market is known for handmade arts and crafts with an international flair and the diverse community of Detroit coming together for the freshest produce and tastiest foods. Germack does a good job embodying the market in a cafe that is open every single day of the week.
Hearty baked goods like chocolate chip scones and cinnamon buns fill the pastry case by the register. Wooden shelves decorated with every adorable coffee and tea trinket imaginable lead guests toward the back of the shop, where bags of coffee beans border the arched entry where the roasting and baking happen.
Seating is carefully placed throughout the shop to ensure that guests feel like they can nestle up with a cup of chai for the entire afternoon.
The Red Hook
This cozy corner coffee shop has a welcoming patio complete with cheery yellow chairs and ivory umbrellas. Overflowing copper pots filled with sweet potato vines and hearty flowers soften the space.
It’s hard to find a coffee shop that offers a mug and matching saucer, The Red Hook does. This ups the cozy factor exponentially.
This coffee shop also has a twin shop that serves wine. There isn’t a wall between these two shops, so it's easy to transition from one to the other—cappuccino to merlot.
Anthology Coffee
Blink-and-you’ll-miss-it, this coffee shop is the epitome of cool. Anthology Coffee’s home is a white-painted brick building with three large garage doors open to an expansive patio. There must be a jungle’s worth of greenery that softens the light and airy space.
Lots of tables are scattered around the space, and even when the shop is full of customers, it feels quiet.
The coffee bar is clean and straightforward. The roasting area behind it is clearly visited and worked on daily. The smell is heavenly—earthy and warm.
Dessert Oasis Coffee Roasters
Moody, dark, and poetic- since 2015, this family-owned coffee shop has felt like the perfect place to write a love letter on a typewriter while listening to Chopin.
With dessert in the name, there are going to be sweets. And boy, are there! Maple Pecan Cheesecake, Blueberry Muffins, Perfect Croissants, Chewy Peanut Butter Cookies, and more!
Grab one of the many seats overlooking the busy street on a grey day in November, and pair it with a cappuccino and chocolate croissant (warmed up) for the ultimate cozy experience in the D.
Roasting Plant Coffee
Self-described as the “Willy Wonka of coffee” because of the eclectic contraption that shoots a variety of beans drive-up-bank-teller-style over visitors' heads straight to the barista for the ultimate in fresh coffee. Yes, it’s cool. It’s a great reason to visit, but the best reason? The people who work here.
On the corner of two busy streets, this coffee shop’s charm is its people. Guests are greeted with a smile and made to feel like they are the only ones there- even when there is a line to the door.
Many comfy-cozy seating options in this small space. There is a lot to look at and a lot to hear, too, so it might not be the best spot for working or reading. It is, however, ideal for people-watching or meeting a friend!
Madcap Coffee
Like Rome and Detroit had a coffee baby- that’s what this place is. Be ready to order, then move along. In the middle of the shop are 3-4 four long white bar tables without seats where people stand to work or talk with a coffee in hand.
So, how is that cozy? Well, that part isn’t really, but…
Near this shop’s large window, maybe six or eight bar stools look out into a brick alleyway that has been muraled and styled into hipster-style swankiness. On a cool September day, a table in this alleyway would be the perfect place to enjoy a cup of joe.
