Best Pizza in Oakland County
Story by Brandon Alger
As a Los Angeles native living in Metro Detroit, I never knew of Detroit Style Pizza before moving here. Now that I have had it, it is my favorite. California style will always hold a special place in my heart, but the crispy cheese over the corner of a twice-baked Detroit style pizza? You can’t beat that. This isn’t a personal opinion either. With limitless options, a unique style, and affordable pies that you can enjoy as often as your health permits, Detroit often ranks as the best pizza city in America.

Loui’s Pizza
Loui’s gets my vote for the best Detroit style pizza, but I’ll take it a step further. It may be the best pizza I have ever had. With a brick oven and a simple menu that anyone can enjoy, this is a must-try for any pizza lover. I will warn you though - pizza of this quality takes a while to cook. Don’t go here if you’re in a rush. Take some time, order the antipasto, have a pitcher of your favorite beer, it’ll take at least 30 minutes for your pizza to bake, but the experience is worth it.
Amici’s Kitchen and Living Room
If Loui’s is my favorite Detroit-style pizza, Amici’s Kitchen and Living Room is my favorite Carlifornia-style. It doesn’t call itself that, but that’s what it reminds me of. The light crust and unique toppings coupled with the extensive martini list and tap options remind me of a place I may have visited on the bay of Berkeley, CA, rather than downtown Berkley, MI. The “Shrooms and Grass” and the “Roasted Red Pepper” pizzas are my favorite pies, and if you want a unique cocktail try the Dirty Detroit. Vegan pie options are also available, and if the weather is nice dine on the patio.
Jolly Pumpkin Pizzeria & Brewery
Jolly Pumpkin is great not only for the incredible pizza, but for the beer and for the kids menu - there’s something here for everyone. The truffled mushroom pizza is a must-have for any mushroom lover, and pairs exceptionally well with the Bam Biere farmhouse ale. They also get BBQ chicken pizza right, as the flavor is more chicken and roasted vegetable toppings, with only a hint of BBQ sauce. This pairs well with Madrugada Obscura, which is a unique sour stout and one of my favorite beers.
Sick Pizza
Sick Pizza in Oxford is exactly the small-town pizza place you wish you had growing up with. Nestled in a two-story brick building in downtown Oxford, it’s familiar, it’s homey, but the pizzas are hand-crafted and upscale. Round or square, dine-in or take-out, and one of their specials is the 16” hand-tossed round pie, which Sick Pizza describes as, “light, airy, and delightfully chewy.” After filling up, consider walking next door to Mr. Zero’s Quarter Arcade for some classic arcade gaming.
Spicy Slices
Novi is no stranger to amazing food, and while most of the buzz around Novi dining is the authentic Japanese cuisine options, Spicy Slices does Italian pizza with the same quality. With imported flour and a rotating stone oven, you get to pick your sauce, cheese, and toppings. If that’s intimidating, they have base suggestions to get you started, like the Pesto and Feta or San Marzano and Parmesan. For me, the Brooklyn Red with Four Cheese blend will always hit the spot for a classic pizza.
Coratti's on Main
Coratti's On Main opened in 2008 by the daughter of an Italian family, this family dining experience has many food and wine options. Since you’re reading this blog and because it’s what they do best, you’re here for the pizza. Don’t sleep on the antipasto appetizer options, but the roasted veggie pizza is incredible and puts this place on the map for any pizza enthusiast.
Como's Restaurant
Como’s is an establishment in the Metro Detroit pizza scene. You’ve heard of it, and if you’ve not tried it you absolutely need to. On the corner of 9 Mile and Woodward, Como’s makes for a great starting point to your evening in Downtown Ferndale. Grab a pizza and a beer, then make you way down 9 Mile to the various shops and lounges.
Crispelli’s Bakery & Pizzeria
I tend to avoid “chains” on these kinds of lists, but Crispelli’s is too good to not include. Even though they have 4 stores, plus Bread in Royal Oak, the quality has never suffered. Crispelli’s is a great spot for hosting a small party or going with a group of friends. You can have a server, or serve yourself. I prefer the round-style pizzas here, but their Detroit Style is made with the same quality and ingredients.
Antoniou’s Towne Square Pizza
Antoniou’s Towne Square Pizza has been family owned and operated since 1996. They offer a full menu of entrees and subs, but the pizza is why you’re here. With unique options, including keto and gluten free, this spot has a pie for everyone. Don’t miss their greek salad either, or the chef salad if you want something heavier.
Jerusalem Pizza
With over 14 years of serving the region with kosher pizza, Jerusalem Pizza can’t be left off our list. In addition to their standard crust Jerusalem also offers “Jerusalem Pies” which are brushed with egg and can have sesame and/or garlic added, based on preference. With unique options like falafel, kishke, and stroganoff pizzas, you can enjoy this spot whether you’re here for the kosher ingredients or simply want something unique.
Barb’s Pasties and Pizza
If you’ve been in Oakland County for a while you’ve no doubt heard of Barb’s and the incredible pasties. You’ve probably tried them, but have you tried the pizza? If not, you need to. I won’t try to compare the pizza to the renowned pasties, but I will say the quality you expect for the pasty extends to the pizzas served up here. A basic pepperoni pizza may sound like a dull dish for children, but when you order it from Barb’s, it’s safe to expect something more. Slices are also available for lunch, weekdays from 11-2.
Palazzo di Pizza
Located about halfway between downtown Royal Oak and the 75, Palazzo di Pizza is an unassuming Detroit-style pizza spot sets itself apart with its attention to quality and amazing Italian gelato options. That’s not to say the pizza isn’t also great, but if you’re not getting dessert after you enjoy a pizza, you didn’t get the full experience. I really enjoy the double-pepperoni, but the Sweet Tropical Heat is a fun adventurous option that I also recommend.
Buddy's Pizza
No blog about Metro Detroit pizza is complete without a mention of the original Buddy’s, located at Conant and McNichols. Take Dequindre two miles south of the county-line, and you’ll be at the birthplace of Detroit-style pizza. The dive-bar aesthetic and parking lot mural complete the experience here, but even if you don’t frequent the city and have a local Buddy’s that you prefer, you must visit the original at some point. Why not tonight? If a drive to Detroit isn’t in the agenda, there are dine-in and delivery options throughout the metro.
