Revisiting Greektown Restaurant Week
Story by Samantha Scott | Photos by Greektown Casino Hotel
Greektown, in partnership with the Detroit Greek Independence Day Parade Committee and the Hellenic Museum of Michigan, kicked off a yearlong celebration in recognition of the bicentennial anniversary of Greek Independence, with Greektown Restaurant Week from April 5-11th.
Say no more! Greek food, sign us up. All week long, restaurants throughout the area offered specials and deals with themes honoring the Greek community and culture.
Here’s a recap of some of the participating restaurants and their unique creations during Greektown Restaurant Week:
Astoria Pastry Shop
A dessert lovers paradise, the award-winning Astoria Pastry Shop has something for anyone with a sweet tooth. Cheesecake to macaroons, specialty cookies to baklava, it’s never easy to walk out with only one thing. If you’re looking for a Greek dessert to try, the choureki, a sweet egg bread traditionally shared during Greek Easter, is an excellent choice. This bread is so good, Emeril Legasse, came all the way to Astoria to learn how to make it.
The Lobby at the Atheneum Suite Hotel
The Atheneum Suite Hotel in the heart of Greektown, recently renovated their lobby and bar, complete with Greek flair and charm. Enjoy the refreshed ambiance in the new Lobby Restaurant featuring a mouthwatering menu of seared scallops, lambchops, sliders, various desserts, new cocktail concepts, and more. The Lobby is the perfect place to grab drinks and appetizers to start your night out in Greektown.
Firebird Tavern
When you think of dining at Firebird Tavern, beer and bar faire first come to mind. But for Greektown Restaurant Week, they pulled out the creative stops offered a special Greek Poutine! Talk about a pleasant surprise. Crispy fries, feta cheese, gyro meat and Kokkinisto sauce, yes please.
Golden Fleece Restaurant
A Detroit staple for 50 years, the Golden Fleece Restaurant is definitely a go-to spot for authentic and delicious Greek food. Stop by to try their new beef or lamb kebab, infamous gyros or Mousakas. Not ready to eat out yet? No worries, they offer carry out and a Greek grocery store where you can order either online, pick up and enjoy at home.
The Greek
One of Detroit’s newest eateries, the Greek, is bringing contemporary Greek cuisine to the city. With a fresh take on traditional dishes, the Shrimp Santorini and Pastitsio are worth writing home about. To add a cherry on top, Level Two Rooftop, is just above the restaurant to keep the good times going after a delicious meal.
Pappy’s Sports Bar & Grill
Come for the game and a beer, but take advantage of the unique Greek inspired dishes. Whether it’s the signature Greek Sausage hoagie or Greek pizza, Pappy’s Sports Bar & Grill makes sure to offer enticing dishes to enjoy while cheering on the Tigers.
