Yaaaaaaas, Honey, There's Drag in Detroit
Story by Sarah Cottrell
Happy Pride Month! Detroit is an LGBTQIA+ friendly town where you can catch a drag show or other events that celebrate queerness year-round. Check out the below for some of Detroit’s best.
Brunch or Bingo
Five 15 in Royal Oak is a mainstay for drag brunch and bingo. Every weekend they have two seatings for bingo, at 7 PM and 10 PM, and fun & prizes galore! In addition to weekend bingo, they also host many thematic brunch events, trivia nights, and special one-night-only performances. Check their calendar for the most up to date listings!
Ferndale Project in Ferndale is a brewery that has become a community staple. There is a coffee shop on site, too, and they host many fun community events including Drag Queen Brunch. Check their calendar, especially as we get further into Pride Month, for additional events.
Gigi’s Gay Bar in Detroit is famous for their Saturday Cabaret, and just for being an amazing bar with the best vibes on every other day of the week. They pride themselves on being “the longest running and most awarded female impersonation revue in Michigan’s history” – and that claim alone makes this spot worth a visit.
The Emory in Ferndale hosts a monthly drag queen brunch put on by The Divas of Detroit. Tickets for this show are $15 and they are raising money to help support Ferndale Pride.
Detroit Fleat in Midtown Detroit has also been known to throw a drag party or two in their unique space that includes multiple vendors and food trucks. Detroit Fleat is newer to the scene, hosting its first drag brunch in April 2023 in partnership with Slay Entertainment.
A Little Something Extra
Sidetrack Bookshop in Royal Oak has become famous for their epic drag queen story time, as well as being a loud and proud LGBTQ-owned business. There is a large, supportive community that rallies around this shop and its patrons so that they can bring high quality entertainment and learning opportunities to kids of all ages. While there aren’t any story times on their calendar as of this moment, check back frequently for more info. They are also working in connection with Royal Oak Public Library for June Pride events.
