Leisure and Sports Activities in Detroit

Fishing for Musky on Lake St. Clair by Bill Bowen
Sports are good for the body and mind. Be it on the water, at the park, on the fields or on the golf course. You name a physical activity, and Detroit has probably got it covered. The city is also super supportive when it comes to its professional sports teams. In fact, cheering them on could be considered its own type of physical exercise.

WATER SPORTS & OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

Kayaking

Get out and enjoy all of the activities that the summer months have to offer. We’ve got kayaking, canoeing and paddle boarding.

You can rent all of the above at most of the 13 Huron-Clinton Metroparks. While you’re at your park of choice, check the open water to see if you spot any kite boarders. This newfangled sport is all the rage. You can contact Great Lakes Kite Boarding for information about lessons and renting equipment.

Fishing

If the catch of the day is more to your liking, try casting a line on Lake St. Clair. Fresh water in Michigan is a dime a dozen, so fishing and boating are always an available option. Other places to get off the land for a bit are Lake Erie Metropark, William G. Milliken State Park and Harbor, the Clinton River and Belle Isle Park.

Golf

Grab your clubs and golf nine or 18 holes. Lake St. Clair Metropark has an eighteen-hole par 3 course for a quick game. Red Oaks and Hampton Golf Club are small nine-hole courses.

If you prefer more of a challenge, check out Fox Hills Golf and Banquet Center with 63 holes of scenic views. You can also try FootGolf here, a combination of soccer and golf. Fieldstone Golf Club is another challenging course.

Or, take the family to one of metro Detroit’s miniature golf courses. CJ Barrymore’s in Clinton Township has two 18-hole courses where you can putt your ball through castles and waterfalls. Other putt-putt courses in metro Detroit: Royal Oak Golf Center, Oasis Golf Center and Garden City Mini Golf.

PREFER TO SPECTATE RATHER THAN PARTICIPATE

  • The Detroit Tigers play regular season major-league baseball April-September. Pick up tickets for certain Friday or Saturday games and you can stick around after to enjoy a fireworks show. On Sundays, kids under the age of 14 can run the bases after the game.
  • You can also catch some great baseball at the new Jimmy John’s Field. Watch the Utica Unicorns as part of the United Shore Professional Baseball League and numerous professional and amateur baseball teams. Concerts also take place at the venue.
  • Plus, Detroit Lions football takes over downtown’s Ford Field starting with the first regular-season home game sometime in September.
  • Starting with the 2017-18 season, Detroit Red Wings hockey and Detroit Pistons basketball will have a new home at Little Caesars Arena, the anchor of The District Detroit entertainment complex downtown. Get tickets for any of the remaining 2016-17 season hockey games this spring, and you’ll have a chance to say farewell to The Joe, which has been hosting Red Wings’ hockey since 1979, with thousands of loyal fans. This spring, you can see the Pistons finish their reign on the court at The Palace of Auburn Hills.
