Witness Detroit’s history in the cars that built its legacy

Media Contact: Chris Moyer Sr. Director of Communications 248-840-7332 cmoyer@visitdetroit.com

WHAT: Antique Touring Company offers guided tours of Detroit in classic Ford cars

FEATURING: Three different vehicular artifacts to ride in across four unique tours of the city — the Belle Isle, Riverfront Loop, Corktown and MotorCities routes.

WHEN: All summer long, reservations required

WHY: More than a century ago, the first mass-produced automobiles rolled off the assembly line in Detroit. The city has grown and changed a lot since then, but Detroit is still proud of its roots. With Antique Touring Company’s expert tours of the city, visitors can experience the city’s eccentric history in the luxury of the vehicles through which Detroit made its mark on the world.

“When you look at the history of Detroit, it’s inextricably linked to the history of the automobile, especially those of the Big Three auto manufacturers,” Christopher Moyer said. “So when you’re able to tour the city in the very cars that built its legacy across the world, you’re not only able to witness history — you’re able to experience it, too.”

ATC features four distinct tours of Detroit, using four distinct models of cars made right here in the Motor City. These are the 1929 Model A Woody Station Wagon, 1930 Ford Model A Phaeton and 1931 Ford Model A Slant Window Town Sedan.

The story of the Model A captures the enthusiasm around Ford automobiles that made the auto industry so dominant, even as the Great Depression started to unravel America’s economic gilded age. These “new Fords” helped the auto industry progress into a new era as consumers eagerly awaited the next big release. They also represented a transition from Ford’s Highland Park plant to the confines of the famed Rouge Factory.

ATC has been giving tourists an up-close experience of Detroit’s history since 2018, and its guides are experts on the city’s history and evolution. On certain tours like the Riverfront Loop, riders can hop on and hop off the ride at any point during the three-hour tour to view the sites that pass by their windows. These types of tours can match a variety of interests and create memorable experiences for tour-goers. Not only can visitors gain knowledge of Detroit and its underdog story, but they can do so in style.
