What to Do on a Perfect Day in Detroit

Imagine waking up to picture-perfect weather — 75 degrees with a light summer breeze. Your calendar is clear and you have the whole day to explore Detroit. How will you spend it? Here are some thoughts:

Take Me to the River

We don’t take great weather for granted in these parts, so pack some sunscreen, wear your shades and plan to spend the day outside. Take a stroll along the Detroit International RiverWalk, a four mile promenade with spectacular views of the Detroit River and neighboring Windsor, Ontario. The RiverWalk’s Rivard Plaza has free parking, concession stands and a carousel.

Belle Isle Bliss

Head to Belle Isle Park for some leisure time on this urban oasis. There are all sorts of recreational activities — kayaking, hiking, swimming — or attractions — the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory, Belle Isle Aquarium and the Dossin Great Lakes Museum. Bike and watercraft rentals are available at the Flynn Pavilion. Relax at the beach and stop for photo ops at Sunset Point and the James Scott Memorial Fountain.

Campus Martius — at the Center of It All

Campus Martius Park, in the heart of downtown, is Detroit’s gathering place. Soak in some sun and the energy of the city at the park’s urban beach. Check their online calendar for frequent special events and other programming.

Dining al Fresco

Deciding which of Detroit’s outdoor patios to dine at may just be your biggest challenge of the day. It’s a good problem to have! Detroit’s restaurant scene has exploded in the past few years so there truly are options for every taste and budget.

Play Ball!

If the Detroit Tigers are in town, a baseball game at Comerica Park is a must. The open air stadium offers an amazing atmosphere and a true Detroit sports experience. Plus, it’s a great place to pick up a souvenir emblazoned with the Old English D.

Summer Serenade

There’s no better way to finish the night than with some music under the stars. Outdoor concert venues in the area include Chene Park in Detroit, Meadow Brook Amphitheater in Rochester Hills, Michigan Lottery Amphitheater in Sterling Heights or DTE Energy Music Theater in Clarkston. The perfect end to a perfect day!
