Spring Must Do’s in Metro Detroit

Spring is here in Detroit! Patios are reopening, outdoor events are kicking off, and flowers are beginning to bloom throughout Detroit and the metro area. If you’re looking to celebrate spring in Detroit, here are eight quintessential Detroit activities that are perfect for the season.

1.Eastern Market Flower Day

Eastern Market is a year-round institution in Detroit. It is the largest outdoor farmer’s market in the United States, where you can wander through the open-air sheds and find the best of Detroit’s local produce.

Eastern Market is especially vibrant in the spring, when the flower stall overflows with color and the special yearly Flower Day is held. Mark your calendars for May 15 for this year’s event!

2. Spend a Day on Belle Isle

3. Catch a Tigers Game at Comerica Park

Spring means the beginning of baseball season in Detroit. The Tigers, Detroit’s major league baseball team, call Comerica Park in downtown Detroit their home. The facility is located within The District, not far from Detroit’s other national sports teams’ homes (Little Caesars Arena and Ford Field).

Walk by Comerica Park on a warm spring afternoon or evening and you’ll hear the cheers over the stands. Better yet, get yourselves tickets and enjoy a baseball game, Detroit-style.

4. Stroll Downtown with Coffee

As the weather warms, it’s time to finally start ordering iced coffee again! Detroit has many specialty coffee shops that have popped up over recent years. One of these is Madcap Coffee, which opened in downtown Detroit in 2019.

Madcap Coffee has an outdoor seating area, and a “walk-through” pick-up lane, so you can stay COVID-19 conscious and order your drink without ever entering the shop, if you choose. So pick up your coffee and walk through downtown. From Madcap, it is a very short walk to The BELT, an art-covered alley that is perfect for a stroll.

5. Get Outside on the Detroit International RiverwalkSpeaking of downtown walks in Detroit, spring is also an ideal time to get outdoors along the Detroit International RiverWalk. This three-mile path runs along the Detroit waterfront and gives great views across the river and toward the downtown skyline.

6. Take a Tour of Detroit

Detroit, or Motor City as you might know it, is a very drivable city. The snow and ice have finally melted, and spring is a great time to get out and go for a tour of Detroit. With Antique Touring, you can take a tour of Detroit in a vintage Model A vehicle and honor the city’s automotive history.

7. Meet the Animals at Detroit Zoo

Detroit Zoo is an expansive zoo of over 100 acres, that is a perfect springtime day out for the entire family. You can see every animal from snow monkeys to otters to even the zoo’s six-month-old lion cub! The Zoo’s very popular Penguin exhibit also recently reopened and is the perfect family-friendly destination.

8. Visit The Henry Ford and Greenfield Village

Spanning 250 acres, The Henry Ford is a must-see attraction in Detroit year-round. However, it is a particularly fun place to visit in spring because much of it is located outdoors. With pleasant weather and gardens starting to bloom, you will love spending a day here, particularly at Greenfield Village which is now open to the public. This village was opened in 1929 and will bring you back in time with horse-drawn carriage rides, authentic Model T vehicles, operational farms, and pure Americana.
