Sister Pie

Detroit’s favorite pie shop is a destination in its own right. Settled in the quiet West Village, baker Lisa Ludwinski has made a delicious brand out of her locally-sourced, seasonal, hearty and uniquely-flavored pies, cookies and desserts (including the best gluten-free and vegan brownie you will ever taste). When the Sister Pie cookbook is released, you will be able to try your hand at some of Sister Pie‘s favorite recipes.

Bon Bon Bon

Bon Bon Bon puts out probably the most unique desserts in all of Detroit. Founder Alexandra Clark has dedicated her life to her love of chocolate, and from that dedication comes the most interesting chocolate flavors in the game. Surprise your taste buds with their paczki, black truffle or coffee and donuts flavors.

Astoria Pastry Shop

With locations in downtown Detroit and Royal OakAstoria Pastry Shop was established in 1971 by Greektown icon George Teftsis. Widely considered to be metro Detroit’s best bakery, Astoria Pastry Shop and its rich cakes, sweet custard rolls and authentic honey-walnut baklava are a rite of passage for many Detroiters. No night out in Greektown is complete without a stop at Astoria.

Avalon Cafe & Bakery

One of their multiple Detroit outposts, Avalon Cafe & Bakery is located right near Campus Martius Park. Stop in for their signature (and most delicious) item, a sea salt chocolate chip cookie. Everything at Avalon is made with 100% organic flour.

Treat Dreams

If ice cream is your vice, Ferndale’s Treat Dreams can’t be beat. Having created more than 60 unique flavors of homemade ice cream since opening in 2010, some of their tastiest concoctions include Coconut Chai, Chocolate-Covered Potato Chip and Sunday Breakfast — maple ice cream with bits of waffles and bacon.

Milano Bakery

Milano Bakery is an Eastern Market staple, with basically every dessert under the sun available for delicious, and cheap, prices. Go to Milano if you’re tasked with buying desserts for a party, and make sure to grab a sandwich for yourself while you’re there.

Dilla’s Delights

If your sweet tooth hits you bright and early in the morning, then Dilla’s Delights should make it on your radar, stat. Named for legendary hip hop producer J. Dilla, his aunt started the bakery in his honor and has been serving up delicious flavors ever since. Try the McNasty Macaroon Cake, Aaliyah Lemon Filled or the vegan Black Bottom Blueberry Cake.

For the Love of Sugar

Newcomer For the Love of Sugar in Brush Park is one of the most Instagrammable spots on the list. Try the bold Rainbow Fruity Cereal Cake, tie-dye macarons, or owner Manal’s unique twist on the Mediterranean favorite, knafeh. Manal also can also create gluten-free and vegan cakes and macarons upon request. Stop by For the Love of Sugar for custom cakes, wedding cakes or a sweet treat for yourself!

Good Cakes & Bakes

Located on Detroit’s Historic Avenue of Fashion, Good Cakes & Bakes serves Detroit’s best cupcakes, regular and vegan carrot cake, regular and vegan brownies, and other sweet treats. You can even stop in for a bowl of soup before you dig into dessert.
