Memorial weekend 2021 in metro Detroit is going to look a little different this year. Many of the historically popular Memorial weekend events are canceled due to the pandemic. This includes the Movement Electronic Music Festival and Civil War reenactment, that in past years have drawn large crowds to the city.
Instead, there are some smaller events across Detroit and the metro area that are taking their place, as well as more low-key, alternative ways to keep the spirit alive from the canceled larger events. Here is your complete guide to celebrating Memorial weekend 2021 in Detroit.
1. Celebrating 20 Years of the Electronic Music Festival in Detroit
The Movement Electronic Music Festival, which usually takes over Detroit on Memorial weekend, is officially canceled this year due to the pandemic. However, people can still visit the Detroit Historical Museum for this photography exhibit honoring the festival and Detroit’s electronic music history.
On May 30, from 6pm-10pm, there will be a special closing event for the exhibit. Electronic music lovers will still have the opportunity to safely celebrate techno music, with music from DJ Stacey “Hotwaxx” Hale, a panel discussion with electronic music greats, and a film screening.
2. Henny & Hamburgers
The first annual Henny & Hamburgers festival will be held May 29 from 1pm-8pm at the Ford District festival grounds. The event is for adults age 21 and up only, and will include some of the best food trucks from across the state, live music performances, bounce houses, and more.
3. Memorial Weekend Psychic Fair
For a mystical spin on Memorial weekend, head over to Livonia for the Memorial Weekend Psychic Fair. The event has free admission, and includes everything from psychic readings, mediums, energy healers, and a market of holistic products.
4. Family Fun at The Henry Ford
The Civil War Reenactment at The Henry Ford is unfortunately canceled for 2021. However, families can still head to the Ford Museum, Ford Rouge Factory Tour, and Greenfield Village for some history and Americana over Memorial weekend. Due to the popularity of Memorial weekend, ticket reservations must be made in advance through the website.
5. Jeezy’s Memorial Day Bash
The Corner Ballpark on Michigan Ave is home to one of the biggest events happening in Detroit over the 2021 Memorial weekend. On May 29th they will host a night of live music with Jeezy’s Memorial Day Bash.
6. Eastpointe Memorial Day Parade
On Memorial Day, Monday May 31st, Eastpointe-Roseville Chamber of Commerce in Macomb County is hosting the Eastpointe Memorial Day Parade. The parade will start at 11am from the Military Museum and end at Spindler Park. Because 2021 marks the 30th anniversary of Desert Storm, the parade will honor the nine service members from Michigan who died in that conflict.
7. Enjoy Detroit’s Atmosphere
With many larger organized events canceled in 2021, you may prefer to design your own Memorial weekend in Detroit. There are so many fun things for adults or the entire family to do. Enjoy Eastern Market, Belle Isle, and other outdoor areas of the city that are fully in bloom this time of year. You may also prefer to experience Detroit’s amazing art scene, restaurants, shopping, and more.
