Big Fun in Detroit’s Spectacular Sports and Entertainment District
Modified: July 08, 2022 | Story by Michelle Fusco | Photos by The District Detroit, Hockeytown Cafe, Elwood Bar & GrillExcitement is bubbling over in Detroit with the recent opening of the new Little Caesars Arena, expanding Detroit’s already thriving sports and entertainment district. The venue features world class acoustics, excellent sight lines, a 5,100 square foot seamless, center hung scoreboard and countless amenities. In fact, the arena has been nominated as Best New Concert Venue by Pollstar magazine. Tours of the new stadium are available.
Good Sports
Little Caesars Arena is home to the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings hockey and NBA’s Detroit Pistons basketball. Coupled with side-by-side Ford Field, the den of the NFL’s Detroit Lions football, and Comerica Park, home of MLB’s Detroit Tigers baseball, Detroit is the only U.S. city in the country to host all four major sports in a few walking blocks. A $100 million renovation to Ford Field, completed in 2017, put a new game face on the already popular stadium. The arenas serve as anchors of the entire bustling sports and entertainment district.
Good Show
Detroit’s live theater options run the gamut — from intimate spaces to grand palaces. The fabulous Fox Theatre, a National Historic Landmark, hosts a variety of big name concerts and live theater events. The Fillmore Detroit hosts rock concerts and rap shows, while the City Theatre is a smaller venue known for comedy. The Detroit Opera House is home of the Michigan Opera Theatre and several live dance performances and Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts is the “people’s theater” and includes a jazz cafe.
Good Eats & Drinks
Naturally, the area supports several longtime favorite restaurants, such as Detroit Beer Company, Hockeytown Cafe, Town Pump Tavern, Harry’s Detroit and the iconic Elwood Bar & Grill — an art deco diner that was moved to make way for Comerica Park. For a uniquely Detroit experience, Cliff Bell’s boasts an upscale menu with a robust lineup of live jazz performances.
New restaurant options are adding to the mix. Rusted Crow is a hot spot and The Royce is a contemporary wine shop and bar offering a small plates menu. For quick and casual, think Hot Taco. In or near Little Caesar’s Arena, try Mike’s Pizza Bar, Sports & Social or Kid Rock’s Made in Detroit.
Meeting for drinks? Try Sports & Social at Little Caesar’s Arena. Or catch up over gourmet coffee at Ashe Supply Co. Want to hang out and play fun games? Hit Punch Bowl Social. Or dance the night away at Bleu Detroit nightclub.
Good Finds
