Sky Covington’s Preservation of Jazz Presents a Tribute to Betty Carter Featuring Sheila Slaughter
Detroit, MI — Monday, November 2, 2026 — Sky Covington’s Preservation of Jazz Monday Night Music Series: Tributes continues its celebration of the extraordinary women who shaped jazz with A Tribute to Betty Carter, featuring the remarkable Sheila Slaughter, live at Aretha’s Jazz Café at Music Hall.
Betty Carter was more than a vocalist—she was an innovator. Known for her unmistakable phrasing, fearless improvisation, rhythmic freedom, and uncompromising artistry, Carter approached the human voice like a jazz instrument. Her influence continues to be heard in generations of singers who followed her.
On November 2, Sheila Slaughter steps into this rich musical legacy for an intimate evening celebrating Carter’s music, spirit, sophistication, and adventurous approach to jazz.
Featuring Sheila Slaughter
A respected Detroit vocalist with style, warmth, and a deep connection to the jazz tradition, Sheila Slaughter brings her own artistry to this tribute rather than simply imitating Betty Carter. Audiences can expect an evening that honors Carter's legacy while allowing Slaughter's individual voice and interpretation to shine.
The evening will be hosted by Mike Bonner and curated and opened by Sky Covington, founder of The Preservation of Jazz.
