Celebrate Detroit Women with these Female Business Owners

Metro Detroit is filled with incredible women-owned businesses. These strong female entrepreneurs have put themselves, their creations, and their services out there for the world to enjoy. They’ve weathered the storms of the pandemic and an ever-changing economic scene. Day after day, they are there for their customers and their employees.

But it isn’t always easy running a business. Since the pandemic, we’ve seen some of our favorite female-led companies close their doors for good. Sadly, several celebrated businesses like Lady of the House and Femology came to an end. However, their legacy lives on and serves as a reminder of the importance of supporting women-owned businesses in Detroit.

Let’s celebrate the strong women of Detroit by supporting amazing women-owned businesses. This article highlights some of our favorite boss-lady businesses in the D.

Avalon International Breads
Location: 441 W Canfield St, Detroit, MI

Avalon International Breads is a woman-owned bakery established in Detroit in 1997. Founded with the vision of offering artisan baked goods made with 100% organic flour, it started as a small storefront in the Cass Corridor and has now grown into a thriving business with three cafes and a production facility that delivers to over 40 restaurants and markets.

Despite the challenges of operating in a city facing economic distress, Avalon has inspired the community, employing more Detroiters and contributing to the city’s revitalization. The bakery is driven by a mission to “Eat Well. Do Good” and prides itself on its three bottom lines: earth, community, and employees.

Citizen Yoga

Founded in 2013 by the passionate and dedicated Kacee Must, Citizen Yoga aims to spread joy and uplift spirits through its mission of promoting mental wellness. Anchored in rich tradition, Citizen Yoga emphasizes the harmonious balance of the body, mind, and intellect.

With a wealth of training and over 5000 hours of teaching, Kacee is a seasoned teacher and TEDx speaker.

At Citizen Yoga, the values of alignment, integrity, community, support, and inclusion are at the forefront of every practice. The studio proudly partners with outreach programs to educate and empower communities with knowledge of physical and mental health options.

Detroit Vegan Soul

Detroit Vegan Soul was founded to bring wholesome and familiar vegan cuisine to the people of Detroit.

Co-founders Erika Boyd and Kirsten Ussery bring their entrepreneurial spirit, culinary creativity, and marketing expertise to the table.

With over 20 years of combined experience in the food industry and communication/public relations, the duo has created a thriving restaurant brand that provides employment opportunities and educates communities on healthy plant-based food.

Detroit Vegan Soul values sustainability, health, and community and continues to spread their message through their two brick-and-mortar restaurants and catering services.

Eldorado General Store
Location: 1700 Michigan Avenue, Detroit, MI

Eldorado General Store is a vintage general store in the heart of Corktown, Detroit, that offers a unique shopping experience. Stocked with one-of-a-kind trinkets and treasures, it’s a paradise of lost treasure, waiting to be discovered.

The store is woman-owned and operates on the belief that together, they can make positive change. They are dedicated to supporting local artists, female entrepreneurs, and sustainable and ethical practices, and they believe that every dollar spent is a vote for a better world.


The Glass Academy
Location: 25331 Trowbridge St, Dearborn, MI

The Glass Academy, located in Dearborn, Michigan, is a beautiful 14,000-square-foot facility run by artists Michelle Plucinsky and Chris Nordin.

It is a private art studio and an educational facility that offers hands-on classes and events for the public to enjoy. The Glass Academy specializes in handcrafted glass objects, ranging from functional beer mugs and wine glasses to decorative pieces for the home and garden.

With a rich background in glass arts, Michelle and Chris strive to expand consumer awareness and appreciation for handcrafted glass through their stunning work and educational events.


Midtown Yoga Detroit

Drifter Coffee is a woman-owned coffee shop located in Detroit, which opened its doors in March 2019. The coffee shop is a two-story community hub with a cafe, quiet area, and greenhouse, offering a locally-sourced menu.

The business is founded on the principles of respect for all humans, understanding of intersectionality, and serving damn tasty coffee. The coffee features locally sourced goods, environmentally-friendly packaging, and specialty fixings, making every cup not only delicious but also socially responsible.
