*Cue the Happy Birthday Song* It’s time to celebrate 250 years of America’s independence. We all know the 4th of July as Independence Day, marking the official birth of the United States in 1776. Fast-forward to today, and we remain a thriving nation rich with history and a bright future.
It’s time to celebrate all things red, white, and blue this summer. America 250 is a nationwide celebration for America’s birthday. And if you’re visiting Detroit this summer, there’s an entire line-up of events happening throughout the Metro Detroit area to put you in a birthday celebration mood. Fireworks displays, history-driven programming funded by the America250MI grant, family-friendly festivals, live entertainment, and more await you in the D for the best America 250 events in Michigan.

1. History: It’s Everywhere! Exhibition Series - opened in January
Birmingham Museum, 556 W Maple Rd, Birmingham, MI 48009 (Oakland County)
The Birmingham Museum weaves itself into the America 250 narrative with a series of exhibitions spotlighting Birmingham’s history. Each exhibition dives into the archives of how Birmingham contributed to America’s history. Here are the exhibitions currently on display throughout the year:
- Our Indigenous Heritage: The Living Art of Anishinaabe Basketry (featuring art from Indigenous people in Oakland County)
- The Peabodys: 250 Years of Military Service (recognizing generations from a local family’s role in U.S. military service)
- Birmingham Life in the 19th Century (get insights into the life of a woman during the 19th century in the Midwest)
- The Birmingham Eccentric’s View of History (learn how history was documented through the eyes of a local newspaper)
2. Shelby Township Arboretum Tree Planting Day - April 24
Burgess-Shadbush Nature Center, 4101 River Bends Dr, Shelby Township, MI 48317 (Macomb County)
The Declaration of Independence was the seed that founded the United States. Join participants at the Burgess-Shadbush Nature Center in Shelby Township to plant the seeds of the future that will bear trees standing tall for the next 250-year celebration! Volunteers will help plant 18 trees, representing 10 native Michigan species. And one special addition: the rare Sycamore Moon Tree was donated in honor of America 250 and will also be planted.
3. Hellenic Footprints: Photographic Exhibition - opens May 2
Hellenic Museum of Michigan, 67 E Kirby St, Detroit, MI 48202 (Wayne)
The immigrant experience is deeply rooted in America’s history, and this museum exhibition spotlights one of the dominant early groups that assimilated into life in the Midwest. This free exhibit unravels a photo archive of the lives of Greek immigrants and how they helped shape Michigan.

4. St. Clair Shores Memorial Day Parade - May 24

The annual St. Clair Shores Memorial Day Parade will bring the America 250 celebration to Harper Avenue! It’s the 73rd year for the parade and will bring back all your favorites: the marching bands, banners, vintage cars, and public figure appearances. This year’s parade will commemorate America 250 by featuring all 50 state flags, carried by volunteers, billowing for the entire two-mile parade route.
Come out to cheer on your state flag as it passes and celebrate every state of the nation!
5. Auburn Hills Drone Show to celebrate America’s 250th Birthday - June 18
Multi-Sports Athletic Field, 1800 Valleyview Dr, Auburn Hills, MI, 48326 (Oakland)
More than 500 drones will fly over Auburn Hills’ Multi-Sports Athletic Field this June. The traditional fireworks show got a tech upgrade by using drones to create jaw-dropping spectacles in the night sky. The two-part drone show will feature drone formations of logos from local businesses, followed by a creative patriotic drone light display honoring America’s birthday.
6. Detroit Freedom Festival - June 22
7000 Roosevelt, Ste. 202, Allen Park, MI 48226 (Wayne)
What’s better than one birthday celebration? How about two at the same time! The Windsor-Detroit International Freedom Festival celebrates Independence Day for the US (July 4) and Canada (July 1). This international birthday party bridges the gap between the two countries with fireworks visible from either border, music, food, entertainment, and more.
For one of the best fireworks viewing experiences, climb aboard the legendary Detroit Princess for an evening of celebrating America. Tickets start at $229.
7. America 250: Celebration of a Nation - June 25

Farmington Hills is inviting everyone to Founders Sports Park for their America 250 Michigan celebration. The massive 101-acre park is packed with fun activities the entire family will enjoy. Play, grab a bite, and pick a spot on the lawn for a front-row seat to the fireworks at night.
8. “Through the Years” Free Summer Concerts - July 8-29
River Bends Park, 5700 22 Mile Rd, Shelby Township, MI 48317 (Macomb)
Here’s one gift you can’t wrap! River Bends Park in Shelby Township is treating everyone to the gift of free music all July for America’s 250th birthday. Every Wednesday evening in July, visitors can check out live music performances by local Metro Detroit cover bands and tribute groups playing music from various generations. Each show is family-friendly, and pets are welcome, too. Save the date for this line-up:
- 7/8 - The Family Tradition Band (named “Best Band” by Hour Detroit Magazine)
- 7/15 - Magic Bus
- 7/22 - Stone Blossoms
- 7/29 - Bandwagon (voted top 5 cover bands in Metro Detroit)
9. Freedom Plane National Tour: Documents That Forged a Nation
The Henry Ford Museum, 20900 Oakwood Blvd., Dearborn, MI 48124 (Wayne)
American history hits the road this summer. The Henry Ford Museum hosts a collection of important archives documenting America’s road to independence. The National Archives and Records Administration traveling exhibition will feature George Washington’s Oath of Allegiance, the signed Treaty of Paris, the Senate’s edits of the Bill of Rights, and many more. It’s a limited-time exhibition that will continue traveling across the country after Michigan. It’s a free exhibition!
10. Thunder Over Michigan: Stars, Stripes, and 250 Years Strong - July 17-19
Willow Run Airport, 801 Willow Run Airport, Superior Township, MI 48198 (Wayne)
The Thunder Over Michigan Air Show is one of the popular Detroit events in 2026, taking off with an America 250 theme at Willow Run Airport. Look up to see military aircraft from the US Air Force and the Marine Corps, as well as restored historic planes that still soar high in the friendly skies. On the ground, visitors can enjoy meet-and-greets with the pilots, exhibitions, and a KidZone.
11. Troy Traffic Jam 2026: America’s 250th - August 2
Columbia Center, W Big Beaver Rd, Troy, MI 48084 (Oakland)
The Motor City brings heritage to the forefront during the Troy Traffic Jam. It’s the biggest car show in Troy, showcasing automotive culture throughout the years to celebrate America 250. Discover American innovation from the Ford Model T to modern-day exotic cars. There will be more than 360 cars driving your excitement at this event. Join more than 7,500 attendees for car viewing, live talks, robotic demos, art, family fun, and more.
