Where to Get the Best Bagels in Detroit

There aren’t many better ways to start your morning than with a bagel and coffee, and while Detroit isn’t New York, we do have some great spots to get a warm, tasty bagel. Below you’ll find some of the best spots to get a bagel in metro Detroit, and some unique, delicious items to try.
Detroit Institute of Bagels
Detroit Institute of Bagels is a Jewish bakery and deli that reopened in Detroit after the COVID-19 pandemic. The bakery was started by brothers “who united their passion for authentic bagel-making” in Detroit.
They have a mix of bagels like asiago, which features fresh, melted asiago cheese, poppy bagels and more. They also have different bagels on different days, including pumpernickel, egg bagels, cheddar jalapeño and more. They’re open Wednesday through Sunday.
You can also get a bagel sandwich, add fresh cream cheese, lox and more.
New York Bagel - Ferndale, West Bloomfield, and Southfield
New York Bagel has been serving metro Detroit since 1921 and is now in its third generation of family ownership. They have three locations in metro Detroit.
Their scratch bagels come in 18 different flavors, and they contain no trans-fats, preservatives, dairy products or peanut products.
They have cinnamon sugar, cinnamon raisin and blueberry for sweet. Try the pumpernickel or rosemary and sea salt for savory bagels. Their cream cheese comes in nearly a dozen falvors from plain, to sundried tomato.
The company said they even make bagels for dogs called Dogels.
Eastside Bagel - St. Clair Shores
Eastside Bagel has been serving up New York-style bagels for two decades in St. Clair Shores. They’re open every day offering bagels to go with freshly-whipped cream cheese, plus other breakfast bagels.
They have nearly two-dozen bagel types. If you want something sweet try the chocolate chip, cinnamon( sugar, apple or raisin), or the blueberry. For savory, there are plenty to try including the classic everything, a cheddar cheese, three-cheese bacon, au gratin and more.
If you want it to be a sandwich, you can add egg, cheese, meat and more.
James Oliver Coffee - Detroit
While James Oliver is known for its variety of coffees, you can sit down at its cafe in Corktown to enjoy a mix of bagels and other cafe items. They have several different bagel options, including black sesame garlic, Mediterranean and jalapeño pretzel. You can get them toasted, untoasted, whole, or with a mix of regular or vegan cream cheese.
If you want, you can also make it a sandwich by adding different meats, veggies, spreads and cheeses.
Brooklyn Bagel and Deli - Bloomfield Hills
Located about 30 minutes north of Woodward, Brooklyn Bagel and Deli serves up fresh, handmade bagels every day.
Their regular lineup of bagels includes garlic, onion, plain, everything, pumpernickel and more. You can also try an onion bagel roll, cinnamon sugar, asiago, or the New Yorker. The shop also sells a variety of flag bagels they call “Flagels.”
You can also get a bagel sandwich, bagel with cream cheese, peanut butter, jam and more.
Detroit Bagel Factory - Livonia
Detroit Bagel Factory has been serving fresh bagels for more than 55 years.
Sweet bagels include blueberry, chocolate chip, cinnamon raisin or cinnamon sugar. Savory bagels include mozzarella, egg, everything, pumpernickel, asiago and more.
On Tuesdays, they call it “bagel Tuesday” with 13 bagels for $9.
They also have different bagels for holidays – like green bagels for St. Patrick’s Day.
Stage Deli - West Bloomfield
Stage Deli opened in 1962 and is now in its third generation of serving up delicious food. You can get bagels and add cream cheese, different lox, smoked whitefish and more. Bagel options include plain, egg, salt or onion.
Jerusalem Pizza - Southfield
While they do have pizza in their name, you can get delicious, fresh bagels at Jerusalem Pizza. They have a variety of fresh bagels inside the store.
