With a population that is overwhelmingly African American and teeming with historical people, places, and events--Black History Month is a big deal in Detroit.
Thus, it comes as no surprise that February is a month with many exciting events celebrating the illustrious past and bright future of Black Detroiters.
Visit Detroit has compiled a list of some of the ways you can celebrate Black History month in our fair city.

Discover Black-Owned Business
Detroit has a rich entrepreneurial spirit. Get to know some of the many businesses that serve our great city. No matter what you are looking for, there is probably a Black-owned business that meet your need. Whether you are looking for a delicious meal for date night or a gift for someone you love, get to know some of our member businesses.

Here are a few of our picks for just a few of the unique Black History Month events going on around town.
Steppin' into Black History Month
Steppin' is a popular form of dance in the Black community--popularized in the Midwest. This event as part of the Black History Month celebrations at the DIA and will feature beginner lessons and open dancing at the museum.

Black Business Reunion: TechTown’s annual Black History Month conference
This event celebrates the legacy and future of Black-owned businesses in Detroit, highlighting entrepreneurs who’ve shaped our city’s growth.The event is billed as a day of networking and celebration honoring Detroit’s Black business legacy, recognizing the impact of Black-owned businesses in our communities, and fostering collaboration for a brighter future!

An inspiring, educational and entertaining event for all ages.

Black History Month Buffet
The Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, & Justice Office and the Culinary Studies Institute at Oakland Community College join forces again to bring to you a soulful taste of dishes and desserts from the ethnicities of Afrocentric families. In celebration of Black History Month 2025, join us for a lunch buffet presenting the succulent flavors of traditional ‘soul food’!

Community Events
This year many of our favorite cultural and community institutions are offering exciting events for Metro Detroiters and visitors to learn about the history of Black Detroit and to celebrate an exciting vision for the future.
Main Library and many other neighborhood branches will host puppet shows, dance performances, special crafts, and oral history workshops for children, teens and families. Adults can choose from a wide range of educational events, historical discussions and performances.
Mark your calendars for an evening celebrating the musical legacies of Black artists with select tenors and sopranos from the Detroit Opera on Tuesday, February 20th at 7:00 p.m. And, be sure to check out the current exhibit “Encore” by artist Desiree Kelly with a special closing reception on Wednesday, February 21st at 6:00 p.m. in the Galleria.
For over half a century, the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History has dedicated itself to exploring and celebrating the rich cultural legacy of African Americans. The Wright will host numerous events for Black History Month--visit their website for more information.

Black History Month is a time to bring awareness to the many ways that African Americans contribute to the success of America, a time to celebrate their achievements, and a time to highlight narratives that combat racial stereotypes to help promote a more accurate understanding of African American culture. This February, take an opportunity to discover and appreciate the often-overlooked figures whose drive, innovation, creativity, intellect, and expertise have shaped our city.
