Detroit's Best Comfort Food
Story by Michelle Martin
There’s arguably no better season than fall to indulge in comfort foods. And that’s especially true in Detroit, where crisp autumn nights draw people indoors to eat, drink, relax and warm up. Here are seven great places for comfort food –– and where to find equally great drinks and atmosphere.
Savannah Blue
This cozy downtown location has everything from warm crab dip appetizers to shrimp and grits – the perfect fall comfort foods. Finish dinner with golden raisin bread pudding, made with brioche bread, or be sure to stop by for happy hour, where an old fashioned is the perfect cocktail for any day of the week.
Mumma Maria’s House
Located in West Village, Mumma Maria’s specializes in Italian comfort foods – meatball subs, pastas and rich garlic breads. Try the half slab of roasted ribs, topped with a slow-cooked meat sauce, or indulge in the Italian sausage appetizer.
Slow’s Bar-B-Que
Nothing says comfort food more than mac and cheese. Slow’s Bar-B-Que in Corktown has some of the city’s best mac and cheese – along with other favorites such as pulled pork, baked beans and sweet mashed potatoes.
Joe Louis Southern Kitchen
With menu items such as barbecue Cajun-smoked turkey leg, Southern cheese grits and chicken and waffles, Joe Louis Southern Kitchen is the perfect place to have a meal. Try the St. Antione Street chicken and waffles, featuring a red velvet Belgian waffle drizzled with cream cheese icing.
The Eagle Food and Beer Hall
Recently opened in Midtown, The Eagle is known for fried chicken – brined in house and served with a spicy honey. Try it with a side of pickled green beans or hush puppies, and ask the bartender to pour you a maple old fashioned – Four Roses Single Barrel bourbon, Grand Marnier, maple and pepper ginger bitters.
Downtown Loui’s
Upscale comfort foods like mac and cheese made with a red ale cheese sauce are joined by other favorites such as lamb chops and steak tips at this Capital Park eatery. Warm up with a seasonal muddled cocktail or a glass of red wine.
Ivy Kitchen and Cocktails
Whether you go for brunch for short rib hash or stop by for dinner for the corned beef brisket, Ivy Kitchen and Cocktails is known for comfort food. Start dinner with a salted caramel martini, made with Bailey’s, Bacardi and caramel syrup.
