The alcohol market is worth nearly $200 billion a year. But, an important statistic is showing that there may be a change in the marketplace.
“30% of people who are of drinking age do not drink alcohol,” Tracy Stuckrath, president/chief connecting officer of Thrive! Meetings and Events told Meetings Today in 2022. “A lot more people are very concerned about their health and so they're looking to not drink as much, or they want to have maybe one (drink) and then they don't want to have any more after that.”
The trend is being driven by younger generations--Millenials and Zoomers. In fact, according to Nielsen’s “Coming of Age: Gen Z” study, Gen Z consumers are significantly reducing their alcohol consumption, with 66% of them stating that they are actively trying to drink less alcohol.
Major corporations and restaurants are paying attention. Sober or Sober-Curious consumers don't just want to drink soda or juice. They are looking for attractive and tasty mocktails that make it possible for them to still be active in their social scenes.
Here in Detroit, the city's first Zero Proof gathering space, Mockery, opened early this year. The founder, Karlyta Williams said that she began a non-alcoholic journey during the coronavirus pandemic when she like many others coped with the drastic changes by drinking. She eventually took the time to reevaluate her relationship with alcohol and explored becoming a zero proof bartender.
Given the rise in the popularity of mocktails, Visit Detroit thought it only right for us to help you find the best places to enjoy them around town.
