Best Donuts in the Detroit Metro Area
Story by Michelle Martin
Paczki Day is coming –– a time to indulge in the dense, rich donuts known as paczki that are filled with a variety of jellies and custards. And there’s no better place than metro Detroit to find them.
Hamtramck, home to Polish immigrants for most of the 20th century, is where many locals shop for paczki. But there are many other great bakeries across metro Detroit –– and they have great donuts year-round.
New Palace Bakery
This Hamtramck staple has been a go-to for Paczki since 1908. In addition to more traditional paczki flavors like raspberry and custard, the bakery also has specialty options such as orange cream and peanut butter and jelly.
Dooped Donuts
Classics and specialty donuts are on the menu at this downtown Detroit shop – but with a twist. All of the donuts are vegan. A few specialties to try: Masala chai and Mexican hot chocolate.
Daily Dozen
A family-owned donut shop founded in Warren in 1985, Daily Dozen now has three locations (including Royal Oak and Sterling Heights). Specialty donuts include Michigan cherry and Girl Scout-inspired Samoa.
Yellow Light
Located in Detroit’s burgeoning Jefferson-Chalmers neighborhood, Yellow Light is a drive-through donut shop featuring everyday favorites as well as specialty flavors such as brown butter, vanilla bean, and plantain.
Family Donut Shop
Locals are drawn to this Hamtramck shop not only for paczki and donuts but also for its burek – a thin, flaky dough stuffed with meat or cheese.
Knapp’s Donuts
Downtown Rochester’s Knapp’s is a favorite for classic donuts as well as wonderfully decorated varieties for holidays and other special occasions.
Donut Cutter
This Berkley shop draws people in on Paczki Day and every day. All of the classics can be found here, along with specialty flavors such as carrot cake and apple fritter.
Bommarito Bakery
St. Clair Shores bakery Bommarito is an East side favorite, and its donuts are one reason. For every dozen donuts, you get two free.
Apple Fritter Donuts
A family-owned shop that has been a Ferndale mainstay for decades, Apple Fritter Donuts draws in locals. Apple and cherry fritters are on the menu, along with classic and specialty donuts like toasted coconut chocolate and Fruity Pebbles.
Detroit Donuts
There are several Detroit Donut locations in metro Detroit – one downtown, one in the New Center Area and another in Warren. All three serve donut favorites and coffee, and they are a favorite stop on Paczki Day.
Tringali’s Bakery
An Italian bakery in Warren, Tringali’s Bakery brings people in for its donuts and paczki. In addition to traditional paczki flavors such as custard and blueberry, the bakery has two special offerings – cannoli cream-filled and cappuccino cream.
