The Rink at Campus Martius

Probably the most well-known outdoor ice rink in metro Detroit, The Rink at Campus Martius offers skating in the heart of Downtown Detroit, surrounded by buildings and the city’s Christmas tree.

It’s open 7 days a week and on holidays.

Monday-Thursday: 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Friday: 11 a.m. to midnight

Saturday: 10 a.m. to midnight

Sunday: 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

On Christmas, the rink is open from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. and New Year’s Eve is open 11 a.m. to midnight.

A skating pass costs $12 for adults, $9 for children, $8 for active military and first responders, $9 for seniors 59 and up, and skate rental is $6. Tickets are purchased on-site on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Dodge Park Ice Rink in Sterling Heights

The Dodge Park Ice Rink will open on Dec. 1, 2022 with ice skating available for people of all ages.

The rink is open every day of the week and costs $5 for non-residents with skate rentals costing $3. You can get updates on the rink to see if it’s closed due to weather by calling 586-446-2711.

The Rink at Royal Oak – Centennial Commons in Downtown Royal Oak

The outdoor ice rink in Downtown Royal Oak is returning after its debut last year. It's 60 feet by 90 feet and can hold up to 250 skaters at a time.

It costs $10 to get on the rink and $5 to rent skates, and tickets are available on a first-come-first-serve basis.

It will be open daily through the new year from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday-Tuesday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

Buhr Outdoor Ice Arena in Ann Arbor

Public skating is available at the Buhr Park Outdoor Ice Arena in Ann Arbor starting Nov. 19. On top of public skating, they have drop-in hockey for all ages and genders, plus some nights where it’s just sicks and pucks.

Admission is $6 for adults, $5 for kids 17 and under and skate rental is $3.

Huron-Clinton Metroparks

Ice skating is also offering at several Huron-Clinton Metroparks in the area. They include Stony Creek Metropark, Lake St. Clair Metropark and Kensington Metropark.

Barnum Park Outdoor Ice Rink in Birmingham

The City of Birmingham sets up an ice rink at Barnum Park, and it’s open when weather conditions allow for safe ice.

The rink has public ice skating, and hockey is permitted on the rink from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. daily. More information is available by calling the Parks & Rec department at 248-530-1640.

Blake’s Skating Rink in Armada

As part of Blake’s winter celebration, the orchard and cider mill offers a 2,000+ square foot synthetic ice rink, which is open weekend starting Nov. 18.

It costs $10 per person for a 50-minute skating pass and $5 per person for skate rental, but guests can bring their own skates.

Hutton Ice Rink in Grosse Pointe Park

Another option for those in Wayne County is the Hutton Ice Rink in Grosse Pointe Park. The rink usually opens around Thanksgiving and is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. There’s a Zamboni that keeps the rink in top shape year-round, but there is no hockey, no speed skating, no tag games and no food and drinks.

Other indoor rinks open year-round

While you may want to be outdoors and ice skating in the winter, there are also plenty of options throughout the area for indoor ice skating.

The John Lindell Ice Arena in Royal Oak has public open skates during the week. It costs $5 per skater on weekdays and $10 for weekends with skate rental costing $3.

The Novi Ice Arena in Novi offers public skating throughout the week as well, with $5 admission for everyone and $5 for skate rental. You can also get public skate passes with 10 admissions for $30.

In Trenton, south of Detroit, the Kennedy Recreation Center has public skating throughout the week. Check the website for updated times, but it costs $6 for those 13 and up, $5 for kids 5-12 and $3 for skate rental.

The Dearborn Ice Skating Center has public skating during the week and weekends, with cost for morning sessions at $5 for adults and $8 for non-residents in the afternoon and evening. Skate rental is $3 and they also have learn-to-skate programs.

In Macomb County, the Mt. Clemens Ice Arena has a few public skate days a year. Admission is $5 and skate rental is $3.

The Suburban Ice Arena in Macomb also has public skate on weekdays and weekends. Skate rental is $4 and admission is $6 during weekdays and $7 during weekends.

You can also skate under Black Lights for “SK8 JAMZ” which is $12 for admission.
