Ford Field Game Day Guide
Story by Kate Posby | Photos by Ford Field, Bill Bowen
It’s that time of year again. Football is upon us, and some might say, it’s the most wonderful time of the year.
Bring on the tailgating, bro hugs and synchronized singing of “Forward Down the Field.”
There’s nothing quite like the electric atmosphere of a Detroit Lions home game day. The city comes alive with the sights, sounds, and scents of tailgate parties, impromptu crowd chants, and a wave of Honolulu Blue. Whether you’re gearing up for your first game or you’re a seasoned fan, here are some tips to make your experience a great one.
Got your tickets?
Before heading down to The D, make sure you have your tickets. If you plan to park near the stadium, check out Ford Field’s parking guide.
Pro tip: Ford Field has a strict bag policy and only allows the following types of bags into the stadium:
- Bags that are clear plastic, vinyl or PVC and do not exceed 12” x 6” x 12.”
- One-gallon clear plastic freezer bag (Ziploc bag or similar).
- Small clutch bags, approximately the size of a hand, with or without a handle or strap.
Kickoff Your Day with a Hearty Meal
No matter when kickoff happens, starting your game day with a solid meal is a winning strategy.
Begin your day near Campus Martius Park at Hudson Café, a local favorite for elevated brunch dishes like crepes, eggs benedict, wraps and burgers. For a casual option, head to Avalon Bakery for fresh pastries, coffee, salads and sandwiches. Just off Woodward, Dime Store is another popular spot, known for fluffy omelets and flavorful house potatoes.
In Greektown, there are plenty of options to fuel up. For a classic diner experience, stop by Ham Shop Cafe for hearty plates of steak and eggs, chicken and waffles, and corned beef hash. For a lighter grab & go treat, Astoria Pastry Shop has been serving handmade pastries since 1971. For a true taste of Greece, Golden Fleece is a must-visit, known for its lamb gyros, avgolemono (lemon chicken soup), and their famous flaming saganaki, along with an extensive selection of Greek beers, wines and spirits.
If you’re near Eastern Market, don’t pass up on Vivios’ Food & Spirits. This cozy long-running watering hole is famous for its signature Bloody Mary’s and hearty American pub food, making it a perfect pre-game spot.
Tailgate the Detroit Way
A true Lions game day isn’t complete without a classic Detroit tailgate. Across downtown, lots fill with fans, music, cheers, and plenty of food, creating an electric pre-game atmosphere. Here are some of the best spots to soak up the pre-game festivities:
- The Eastern Market Tailgate: Experience Detroit’s largest and most iconic tailgate at Eastern Market. Here, fans gather for food trucks, music, and an unbeatable tailgate vibe. It’s a short walk to Ford Field, or you can take a shuttle. Note: tickets are required to tailgate at Eastern Market.
- Pride Plaza on Brush Street: Located just outside Ford Field, this free official Lions tailgate features food trucks, beverages, music, and interactive fan games. It’s family-friendly and full of social-media-worthy photo ops.
- Greektown Tailgates: For a lively, classic Detroit experience, head to Greektown. Take a break from the lot parties and pop into Old Shillelagh Irish Pub, known for its rooftop bar, drinks, and a party vibe. Firebird Tavern offers a warm, two-story space with hearty bar bites, signature spirits, and craft brews. These well-loved spots are just a short walk from the stadium and ideal for pre-game fun.
Game Time at Ford Field
If you’re not already sporting Honolulu Blue and Silver, now is the time to gear up! Detroit Vs. Everybody is your go-to for the iconic “Vs. Everybody.” hoodies, tee’s and accessories. For classic Lions jerseys and logo wear, check out Gameday Detroit and FanaticU, both conveniently located just outside the stadium.
Before you head in, make sure you’re following Ford Field’s bag policy, which only allows:
- Bags that are clear plastic, vinyl or PVC and do not exceed 12” x 6” x 12”
- One-gallon clear plastic freezer bag (such as Ziploc)
- Small clutch bags about the size of a hand, with or without a handle or strap
As you approach the stadium, consider all entrances! While many fans flock to the main entrance at Gate A on Brush Street—ideal for pre-game photos—it tends to have longer lines. For quicker entry, try Gate D on Montcalm Street or Gates G and F on St. Antoine Street, which often have less foot traffic. Pro Tip: If you enter through Gate A, the center lanes typically move faster than the outer lanes.
Arriving early will help you breeze through security and soak up the electrifying atmosphere of Ford Field. Find your seats, get settled (you’ll be standing on defense!), and get ready to roar for the Lions!
Post-Game – Keep the Celebration Going
As excited fans pour out of Ford Field, the celebration doesn’t have to end! Detroit offers plenty of options for a post-game party, so make your game plan but stay flexible for the best experience.
Right outside the stadium’s main entrance, Elwood Bar & Grill is a go-to spot for fans. If you’re lucky enough to grab a seat, it’s perfect for a quick bite or celebratory drink in a lively atmosphere. For a bigger space with a full menu of pizza, wings, craft beer, and cocktails, Brass Rail Pizza Bar is just past Comerica Park and across from Grand Circus Park. Another short walk from the field, Detroit Beer Co. offers handcrafted ales and pub food in a cozy, two-level space with outdoor seating—ideal for soaking up the post-game energy. Or check out the city’s newest sports bar, Parlay Detroit, opened by a former Detroit Lions player.
If you head down Brush Street toward Greektown, you’ll find even more options for food and drink. Baltimore Bar + Grill is a classic Detroit dive, while Buffalo Wild Wings is perfect for catching highlights of other NFL games on dozens of tv’s. Turn onto Monroe Street to explore even more choices: Fishbones serves up sushi, sake and New Orleans-style dishes; Pegasus Taverna offers classic Greek flavors and ambiance; and Three Legged Goat provides a modern Greek pub vibe.
Touchdown Dance the Night Away – Rooftops and Nightlife
After a thrilling Lions game, keep the party going at some of Detroit’s best rooftop bars and nightlife spots.
At 3Fifty Terrace, you can soak in panoramic views of Detroit’s skyline while enjoying a lively atmosphere. Tin Roof is another popular spot near Ford Field, known for its live music, casual vibe, and approachable food and drinks. For more rooftop fun, head to Greektown. Exodos Rooftop Lounge offers a high-energy experience with DJ’s, city views, light bites, and cocktails. A few doors down, Level Two Rooftop is perfect for unwinding post-game. No matter where you choose, these spots offer the perfect setting to celebrate a Lions win (or lift your spirits) with friends and fellow fans.
