
How to Hang in Detroit on the Night Before Thanksgiving

The night before Thanksgiving is the biggest party night of the year in Detroit. Whether it’s to catch up with friends and family, or just to let off some steam before sitting down across the table from Grandma the next day, Detroiters love a good party on Thanksgiving Eve.
We scoured the calendar listings and reached out to some of the city’s hottest promoters to find the best party options for your and your crew on the best Wednesday night of the year.
Danny Brown’s Bruiser Thanksgiving V
The Masonic of Detroit
7 p.m., $30, 18+
Detroit rap rebel, Danny Brown, has brought his raucous party to his hometown every year since 2013. The event usually features appearances by other big-name rappers, a hot DJ set, and a hardcore dedicated crowd who knows every lyric to every song. This year guests include Valee, JPegMafia, and DJ Bearcat. The Bruiser Thanksgiving is a huge draw every year, and it always sells out, so advance ticket purchases are recommended.

Mark Ridley’s Comedy Castle
7:30 p.m., $10, 21+
This stand-up comedy night is a classic event. One of the most respected comedy clubs in the country, Mark Ridley’s has been open for over 38 years. Featuring some of Michigan’s best comics, The Night Before Thanksgiving is a signature event. This year is sure to be epic and a great way to get some good laughs in before a big turkey dinner the next day.

Sponge
St. Andrews Hall
7 p.m., $21, 18+
Detroit alt-rock band, Sponge brings their legendary sound back to their hometown. After years of making hit music that has been featured in nearly a dozen films, the band has recently released their fifth studio album. After reuniting earlier this year at the Detroit Music Awards with all five original members, the band is back on the road entertaining fans across the country.
6LACK
Royal Oak Music Theatre
$35, All Ages
Rapper/singer, 6lack, will be bringing his hot soul sound to the city for what will definitely be an energizing show. Having emerged from the Atlanta battle rap scene, the lyricist and songwriter has gone on to fame following the release of his hit single, “Prblms.” His new album, East Atlanta Love Letter has been lauded by critics for its introspective lyrics and intricate beats. The Grammy-nominated performer is sure to be a sure-hit for hip-hop soul fans.
Bar Night and Blues with Thornetta Davis
Detroit City Distillery
8 p.m., $10, 21+
Detroit’s own Queen of Blues Thornetta Davis will be getting you in the holiday spirit with songs that will have you thankful for the Blues. Detroit is Different partners with Detroit City Distillery honoring the legacy of our Blues Queen and her international travels she’ll be playing our hometown for a fun filled night. Be ready to dance, sing, and love the Blues. She will be performing music from her critically acclaimed 2016 release of ‘Honest Woman,’ some Blues standards, and rocking the night away with her band.
Paxahau Presents: Detroit Love Thanksgiving Eve
TV Lounge
9 p.m., $15, 21+
One of Detroit’s premier production companies, Paxahau has given the world great music through their niche marketing, booking and promotion skills. In 1998, the brand took over responsibilities of presenting The Detroit Electronic Music Festival and has since grown the event to the status of international icon. On Thanksgiving Eve, they are presenting DJ sets from legendary spinners Octave One- Live, DJ Minx, Al Ester, and Earl Mixxin McKinney. This is a party where you are sure to dance until you sweat!
BarProv! An Improv Open Mic
Ghost Light
8 p.m., free, 21+
Improv takes the stage every week at this free event in Hamtramck. Bring a troupe or come alone just practice your skills or to challenge yourself for the very first time. The BarProv! boasts a supportive crowd that will be there to back you up while you share the stage with both beginners and pros who are ready to give your, “Yes, And?” moment in the spotlight.
BYOB Holiday Lights Trolley
The Whiskey Six
5 p.m., $75, 21+
Tickets for this tour must be purchased in advance, but then head to The Whiskey Six for check-in. Take in the decorations at this neighborhood bar, check-in, enjoy a bowl of chili and meet your tour guide who will take you on a gawker ride through Detroit’s yuletide lights. Bring your own beverages for the vintage trolley ride! Then be whisked off to the Detroit Zoo for the Wild Lights. Back on board the trolley, cruise down Woodward through downtown Detroit to see the holiday displays. The drop off at Campus Martius Park will allow time for you to ice skate if you choose!
Elf: The Musical
Fox Theatre
7:30 p.m., $62, All Ages
Maybe your relatives brought their little ones, or maybe they aren’t the club type. No problem. There is something to do in the city for folks of all ages. Based on the hit movie, Elf, this musical is fun for family of all ages. The hilarious tale of Buddy, a young orphan who mistakenly crawls into Santa’s bag of gifts, the music and choreography of this Broadway hit is sure to please.
