“Eastern Market is my favorite place to entertain an out-of-towner. It’s 4 1/2 acres of produce, meat, restaurants, art and retail. It is one of the most diverse experiences you will come by in Detroit. Not to mention, it is home to our flagship storefront, Division Street Boutique.
The Heidelberg Project also is great. On Detroit’s gritty east side, it is two blocks of art made from discarded objects. It’s a good representation of Detroit’s optimism and can-do attitude in the face of adversity. (NOTE: In 2016, artist Tyree Guyton announced that he would start a two-year dismantling of his Heidelberg art installation.)
Belle Isle is another Detroit gem. You can get away from the hustle of the city to relax, soak in the skyline, enjoy a barbecue and cool off during the hot summer months. There are also fantastic attractions, including the Belle Isle Aquarium and Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory.
Then, I suggest going to Southwest Detroit for Mexican food. Taqueria El Rey is by far one of my favorites. I shouldn’t tell anyone this because now the next time I go, there will be a line out the door.
Last, I would end the night at Old Miami. Established as a haven for Vietnam vets, it has molded itself into a music venue and overall comfortable place to hang out. It has a wide selection of spirits, a homey feel with couches and a huge backyard. The fire pit is clutch. It’s a real mixed pot of culture, age groups and all around good people.”
