Ooey, gooey, there’s nothing to not like about cheese! Nestled between two slices of bread it’s one of the easiest and most classic sandwiches that has ever existed: The Grilled Cheese Sandwich.
According to folklore, the grilled cheese began to emerge in America around the time of the Great Depression. The easy two ingredient dish was and still is tasty, cheap and filling.
Since then, savvy chefs have tried tons of variations on the classic. From making it with ANY type of cheese, to adding bacon, or tomato. Any way you slice it, (diagonally, please), the grilled cheese sandwich is a treat that anyone can love.
Whether you have it alone or paired with a classic bowl of tomato soup, grilled cheese is a tasty treat that few can ignore.
We visited a few Detroit restaurants serving up the home style favorite, with a twist.
Royale with Cheese
When it comes to the “best” grilled cheese sandwich in Detroit, this is the standout. The “All Up in Your Grill” Cheese Sandwich features Royale with Cheese’s signature fondue, smoked Gouda, Parmesan, a fried egg and turkey bacon. The gooey, delicious mess is served up with roasted tomato basil soup. The sandwich is delightfully sticky and its yummy goodness and camera-worthy cheese stretch makes for a great Instagram pic, too. Overload on dairy goodness with one of their signature shakes. “We wanted to be a different grilled cheese option,” says Chef Bazzy Hass, “Our sandwich is a great breakfast sandwich too. We keep it at an affordable range, and it’s even big enough to share. It’s a fan favorite.”
Cass Cafe
The Cass Grilled Cheese is a favorite at this Cass Corridor mainstay. The sandwich is a combination of pepper jack, white cheddar, mozzarella, Swiss and American cheese on grilled sourdough with wild greens, sun dried tomatoes and red onion. The sandwich is smoky and buttery and fits the diverse menu that is loaded with vegetarian options. While this sandwich isn’t served with soup, Cass Cafe keeps a popular roasted curry lentil soup on their regular menu.
Detroit Beer Co.
Fontina and Gruyere cheese, smoked bacon, and sliced Granny Smith apples on grilled French bread served up with a cup of tomato bisque makes this a yummy combination for a perfect weekend snack. Pair their dreamy sandwich with one of the super cool beers on top.
Detroit Vegan Soul
While it is not on their regular menu, Yelp reviewers have raved about a grilled cheese sandwich with jalapeños that is served up with a bowl of delicious tomato basil soup. Of course, the “cheese” at Detroit Vegan Soul is not dairy or animal based, but also used in their very popular mac and cheez, the product is still gooey and zesty making for a fantastic sandwich.
