The Perfect Pairing, Wine and Detroit

Story by MEGHAN SIMONIE | Photos by Photos provided by: Detroit Vineyards

Ever feel like everyone is visiting these great vineyards whether in Northern Michigan or California?

Do you desperately want to go but never seem to have the time, money, or let’s face it, need the pandemic to be over? Look no further than our own backyard for a little wine tour stay-cation!

Detroit, Wine City

Pure Vin – This premier wine stop in the heart of downtown Detroit has wine tasting available on demand. Additional options include culinary and wine tasting pairings for between 3-4 courses paired perfectly with the ideal wines, both cultivated in collaboration with you and the Pure Vin representative and sommelier, Claudia Tyagi, only one of three in Michigan. Pure Vin is a great location for smaller groups, bridal parties, and corporate/team outings.

The Royce – Also located in downtown Detroit, The Royce wine shop and bar displays major wine retailers from all over the world. Wine can be purchased by the bottle to drink on site or to-go. A menu of small plate options is available to pair with your tasting selections.

Detroit Vineyards – For a Michigan-made selection of wines, look no further than Detroit Vineyards, located near Eastern Market. Run and curated by wine specialists, Detroit Vineyards offers a variety of wines with a Detroit-made focus, including their own specialty wine.

Motor City Wine – Motor City Wine provides a monthly selection of wines to be enjoyed alongside a variety of musical guests. Make sure to book tickets ahead of time to enjoy retail-priced wine ready to enjoy in the shop or to-go.

Wine Tour Around Detroit

Eastside – If you want to expand your horizons outside of the city, there are some great options on the Eastside of Detroit. Unwined Winery in Shelby Township offers a wine tasting, retail store, and light menu. They also make the occasional appearance at Eastern Market. Over in Troy, St. Julian Winery offers a collection of wine to enjoy for tastings or purchase with over 100 years of experience. Michigan By The Bottle in Royal Oak offers a sipper club and wine tasting and includes a calendar of events and featured artists.

Westside – The westside of Detroit also provides a wide variety of wine tasting options. Northville Winery, located in, you guessed it, Northville, has outdoor seating with live music and food trucks to compliment your wine tasting. Also located in Northville, Simply Wine delivers wine tastings with a unique row of wine station tasting machines. For those “Go Blue” fans, and maybe even some “Go Green” ones, Cherry Republic in Ann Arbor has a list of wines for tasting to pair with a light menu and baked good and also offers order ahead with a curbside pickup. Additionally, Ann Arbor’s Briarwood Mall holds a tasting kiosk by Vin Vin Vin to sit and relax while shopping.

Birmingham & Surrounding Area – Michigan By The Bottle has an additional location in Auburn Hills with a tasting room, wine club, and calendar of events. Located in Rochester, Fieldstone Winery offers tastings and food pairings along with special events. The Filipo Marc Winery is definitely worth the drive to Clinton Twp. in Macomb County. Taste some of their 70 varieties of wine or opt to make your own.

Downriver – Modern Craft Wine in Wyandotte provides a tasting room and mix experiences to enjoy while spending the day downtown or on the water.

Whether you are ready to tour downtown Detroit or around the metro area, there is a large array of highly cultivated and masterfully selected wine tasting room options. If you aren’t ready to venture out and about just yet, most of the locations offer wine clubs that can be delivered monthly right to your door to enjoy your own at-home tasting.
